OTF knife as a spear

Not that you couldn't, but you shouldn't. Would be pretty likely to break the first time you tried to use it. MUCH better off trying that with a tough fixed blade of good construction. However, in a survival situation, you would be far better served to carve a point onto the end of the stick, and just using the stick as a spear. Save your knife for what it's meant for, it wouldn't be worth accidentally breaking it if your life truly depended on it.

Irresponsible for a site to recommend a foolhardy thing like that. I suggest, you dont follow that recipe for disaster.
At the very least, dont stake your life on it.
Oh boy, there are some pretty idiotic blogs out there.

Sorry man, that site is a mall ninja trap. I had a slow minute with my coffee cup, and the bits I read there were hilariously bad. Sword cane self-defense? Carrying Knuckle Dusters? The blog is ridiculous and the shop sells junk. This is sounding pretty mean, but wow, this online shop makes Bud K look like a great place to shop.

They also have a great article about how, in a survival situation, you can lash together your Bic lighter and your ferrocerium firestick, and throw them into a lake in hopes of knocking a fish unconscious.

"There you go, now you have the perfect hunting tool at your hand. It makes a good fishing tool and a medium range weapon as well."

ROFLMAO

They have a great selection of Bowie Knives under 10$ :). Why bother doing a spear with an OTF . When you can have the real thing.

Edit: There is enough content there to start a new Tactiloll thread :D

That's the most asinine thing I've ever read. Their next article should be about taping two karambits together to make a boomerang.

I did this once..... I ended up accidentally taking over a whole post appacoliptic society of warriors. They made me their king..... but I had to leave that all behind.....

That's a ridiculous notion.

What sort of nonsensical fairytale would you have to find yourself in in which you're genuinely considering making a spear out of an OTF?

Sounds like you might be in need of some cloud insurance....

Are you mocking the mighty Blade Glaive? Do you want the vampires to win?

Btw, I tried it. It almost worked. The 1400 lb Kodiak bear was charging me and I threw my spear. It might have killed the bear had I remembered to hit the button and deploy my blade out the front. Instead, the spear hit the bear on the noggin with a "doink" and bounced off. Thankfully, I threw my younger brother Paul in the path of the bear. RIP Paul. Lesson learned.

Next time I will remember to deploy my blade on my spear. I've invited my older brother Don to come over next weekend to go camping. I will update this thread at the appropriate time.

If I found myself thrust into a situation where I must survive anywhere in the wilderness that required me to fashion a weapon and/or hunting tool, and all I have knifewise in pocket is a junky OTF...I'm already dead. I just dont know it yet. If I'm purposefully out there, then I had better had a reasonable tool.

If you get lost in the woods with your switchblade....I would say that you do not waste time and energy making a spear. Get your bearings. Assess your chances of being found by those looking for you. Conserve energy, fight hyperthermia, stay warm, stay dry, try to be obvious to those looking for you. But what the heck do I know. I've never been in such a situation. Maybe step one is "Fashion a crude spear and be vigilant. Bears...bears....BEARS!"

Funny thing is no one really takes a 300 dollar otf to torture test, but when they do you find out an otf can take a bunch more than you'd think:

I'd take an otf make a spear and not worry!
