Packaging knives

Tried the google search but it isn't working for me again. I think I've seen a thread on this before but couldn't find it.

Just curious how people package their knives and if anyone has any supplier recommendations? I'd like to do some type of wooden box but can't find much that is relatively low cost, doesn't require a 1000 piece minimum order or doesn't look like junk. I know I know I want cheap, perfect, available in small quantities etc but that probably doesn't exist(at least google can't find it). I've found lots of cardboard watch/necklace boxes that will work or tie boxes if I make bigger kitchen knife sized stuff. Not a lot of size options though for knife shaped objects though. I've got a logo stamp and can get stickers made to use with those boxes if I go that route. Just curious if anyone has other suggestions?

I understand everyone has different opinions on spending money on packaging. Some people would rather all the $ go into the knife. Some people like nice packaging though and I'm in that group and presentation is important to me. If someone wants to save a few bucks I'll ship a knife in a ziplock bag for them:) If a knife is going into a retail environment or being given as a gift then I think presentation is even more important.

I picked up some 1x2x8" boxes at Michaels to test out. They look nice enough but they're flimsy and I'll need to add some type of filler to keep the knives from sliding around. Here's what that looked like:

Great question! I don't sell knives yet but I've wondered about that. Look forward to the responses.

New search engine:

I think some sort of box is a good idea if you sell to the public.

One step up from a fiber padded box is to cut a fitted liner. Use medium weight foam rubber sheet in the thickness of your box, and simply trace around the knife with a pen. Then cut the foam with a sharp scalpel or exact-o knife. Trim to fit the box and set the knife in place.

Selling 400+ items a year, I've put substantial thought into this topic. You've basically got two options:
1. Expensive custom packaging for each item that gives the presentation of a factory made knife
2. Bare minimum that still looks decent

The first option makes it seem like you're trying to be a large scale manufacturer where everything is factory made. The second option tells the customer that the product is what's important to you, not the packaging. If I see a knife in a mass produced custom box, then I'm also thinking that the knife may also be mass produced instead of handmade. Even though my products are handmade in bulk, I still don't want that factory-made appearance relating to my product.

Stacy's mentions about cut liners would be a good compromise.

New search engine works. Thanks for the updated link. I like the idea of the foam cutout. That should be pretty cheap and easy to do. I think I'd be a lot happier with the boxes I have if they had a custom fit like that so that they're not sliding around in there.

and yeah I don't want it to look like a factory package either. I still want that custom feel but I just want it to look nice and protect the knife.
