Painting your plastic knife handle a different color?

So I'm trying to fulfill my surprisingly difficult (so far) dream of a black-and-white mini Griptilian knife. (Black blade, white handle.) I'd like to go with a professional, and if one can make it happen that's what I'll do (though my funds are limited.) Two sources look promising.

Then it hit me: Why not just paint the bastard? And yet I know nothing of paint or plastic. Is it possible? Is the very question ridiculous to the point of being offensive? Has anyone done it? How would one go about doing it? Any advice is really appreciated.

This would be my least preferred option (though certainly inexpensive) since I want the knife to look cool but it would retain the same handle design as opposed to a cooler-looking one like the Wilkins grip but the Wilkins grip is apparently not available in white, though I'm awaiting German confirmation on that.

IMO any paint you use is going to eventually - sooner rather than later - wear off.

I have few friends that own aout body shops and they do make some extremely tough auto finishes these days. So tough that I watched a buddy jam a ball point pen several time into a paint job and with no damage! With these paints though you need to buy it by the quart or maby pint and use it in a spray booth. Wait a minut I forgot some auto body sopply stores will mix your paint and put it in a spray can for you. I had a store mix some viper red for me so I could spray my after market ram air cleaner that was plastic of some sort. I don't know how durable they are on plastic though, after all I don,t carry my air cleaner in my pocket with change but it might work. Paint if I remember cost about twelve dollars a can plus primer and a cleaner like Dealer Prep before you can spray your piece. Give it a try or ask some questions at the shop before you buy. The shop I was at also sold a dye or paint for car interiors which are mostly plastic. Sorry for such a long thread!
