About a year ago, I picked up a digicam Spyderco PM2 (Right handed) with a black finish blade. The steel is S45VN. I had been waiting on the PM2 in Left hand. It was just restocked by BladeHQ (black G10 with satin finish), so I snagged it. It came in S30V. I thought S45VN was the steel used on the newer models. Is there a reason the Lefty didn't switch, or perhaps they merely located and listed an older issue?
All that said, I see no real world advantage to having the S45VN vs. the S30V, but I found it interesting.

What is the two letter date code on the box?

I would imagine that are new-old stock. I assume they do not sell near as many lefties as standard models. This is just a theory, don't quote me on it. I think they will switch iver as well.

That’s weird. Fwiw, in real life use I doubt one could tell a difference. S45VN is “in between” S30V and S35VN, as far as edge retention and toughness, with S30V being the best at edge retention and S35VN being the toughest out of the three.
S45VN is just like Elmax as far as performance goes.

Assuming the letters beneath the models are the code you speak of, GV on the Lefty with the satin S30V blade and GU on the digicam with black S45VN blade.

*Edit* After some research, it appears that the PM2 in Camo was made in July of 2021 (GU) and the Lefty was July of 2022 (GV). Even more puzzling, as to why Spyderco hates Left handed people. =-)
