Parang parang, who's making the parang?

I'm looking for a parang from some nice steel and a good (if not smaller) builder. The Condor offerings look about as close as I've seen to what I'm looking for, but I'd like something created with a little bit more attention, better tempering, and a good steel.

I live on a Pacific island, so I am looking for something "real world," that will get used. I have an Ontario machete, but frankly it's terrible for anything other than just swinging for the fences. Real world things like opening coconuts is a chore because the balance is so bad.

Anybody have any ideas on where to find such a parang?

Take a look at a company called MY PARANG . there hand made in Malaysia . and being distributed by Mora and I believe there being sold by blade HQ . here's a picture of mine .

How hard is the steel on the my Parang? Some Asian steel blades are soft enough to easily shape with a file, and others are very hard at the edge.
I have the Parangatang and it is a good machete. It isn't really an axe, but much sturdier than the flimsy stuff you see in some local hardware stores. It will hold an edge.

Did you take a look at the Condor Mini Duku Parang ? Condor makes a very good job with 1075 steel and this Parang is sweet to handle : it's a small machete but, due to the (rather) thin blade and the very well shaped handle, it can be handled (almost) like a knife for smaller chores. It's the closest I've found to my idea of a Parang. Now, living in the Pacific, you should have easier access to handforged Malaysian Parangs. Some are true beauties.

I believe Bark River makes a parang machete. That might be the kind of thing you're looking for. I'm personally very comfortable with the Condor offerings. I have the full sized Parang machete and Village Parang. Probably will be getting the larger Duku Parang in the coming months. I use Condor machetes and the Pack Golok the most.

Fox Knives of Italy makes some very well-made Parang and Panabas. Both have blades of N690 stainless steel (58-60 HRC), 6.7" in length, 0.23" thick. Survival kit included with the sheath.

PANABAS (FX-509)

For something bigger:

GOLOK HITAM MACHETE FIGHTING BLADE (FX-9CM02B) with a 8.9" blade:

FOX TEAM SURVIVAL DESIGN BY PAOLO BOZZO (FX-STF3) with a near 8.7" blade:

I got the condor duku parang recently and am very happy with it. i dont know anything about "my parang" but would get the condor because its got a full tang with brass riveted scales. (i.e it would be much more of a pain if you ever broke the wood on the "my parang".

Sweet, thanks for the suggestions. I'm surprised there aren't more out there.

For the Condor people out there, are you happy with them? The shapes seem like what I'm looking for, even if the blade thickness is more than I'd like.

I had a Condor Bushcraft Parang, but didn't like the plastic handle. So, after I sold it, I bought a Condor Warlock with micarta handle. So far I am very happy with it. It's extremely well built, durable, a very comfortable parang/golok hybrid type chopper to use, and not too big in my opinion.

Condor makes a great product, and 1075 is a very good steal for machetes and similar choppers. If you want a thinner bladed Condor parang, have you looked at their Bushcraft Parang or the even thinner Eco Parang?

The Duku Parang models (standard and mini) are in thinner stock as well.

This isn't a traditional parang but I really liked how it felt in hand. Made by Ben Tendick

That looks like almost exactly what I am looking for! Maybe a bit longer with a bit less material towards the handle, but that thing looks nice. Cost? Wait time?

If its available he will ship it out pretty much right away. Ben is a nice guy and pretty easy to work with, and he does great work

I like my Condor Parang. Good steel and great leather sheath. The cost is even more surprising. Can't go wrong with the Condor Parang the value for the price is outstanding. I use mine too !
