We've been pretty busy in the passaround forum, and we're trying to take it to the next level. We started fundraising for a permanent passaround sebenza, and George Harrison of Straight River Knife generously donated one to us.

We'd like to continue or fundraising for another permanent passaround knife, currently a Strider is the slight favorite. We do think it is important to support the knifemakers here. So this is my question for all of you, would any of you be interested in working with us to acquire a permanent passaround knife? I expect there will be some questions generated which I'll try and answer a few I can think of at the moment.

What's a permanent passaround?

It's when a knife is sent out for people to try and they post their evaluations here and send it on to the next person. Permanent is that we do not intend to sell it or give it away, it just keep getting sent out periodically.

What if it's lost or stolen?

That's always a possibility, we try to take reasonable precautions, name phone etc. But it still might happen. It would probably help if the knife is unique and easily identifiable.

How much money do we have?

At the moment we have $120. I think if/when we pick a specific knife, it will be a little easier. I would expect that a maker would help "sell" his knife, that is help get people excited about it.

Isn't this just a scam for free knives?

Yes. :p Not really when you think about it. It takes considerable time and effort to organize and runs passarounds, after a few passarounds the admin cost in time would probably be equal to the knife, so in a sense, the organizers are spending their time (as well as their money).

In addition passarounds generate some good feedback, considerable goodwill, and often additional sales. Ultimately some may feel it's not for them, and that is certainly OK.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,

I know George personally and they don't come any finer than him. He carries a Sebenza too so I guess it's no surprize he'd continue to promote this fine knife. Way to go George!

I'm a little dense; are you asking for donations? Of funds or knives? I'd be willing to get into this down the road one way or the other.

Where's the Passaround Knife forum?

Thanks,

I was not clear in what we wanted, sorry about that. In my
mind we need a knifemaker who:

Has something in the $200 to $400 knife that would make a good permanent passaround. Not give us a free knife.

Help us defining what we want, we're totally open to suggestions.

Have something available.

Help makes the sales pitch to raise the funds.

Just wondering about the pass a round knives, doe's the reciever of said knife after utlizing it know how to correctly sharpen the knife so the next person isn't looking at a knife that has a problem from incorrect usage, sharpening skills, neglect? Cavelady

I don't have anything in stock right now but would be willing to work with anyone to put something together. I take it you folks go in on the price of a knife then share it around for some predetermined time? Cindy's comment is right on too, who maintains the knife?

I'd be willing to chip in a little money too, to get in on that action.

Sharpening is a very good point to bring up. For Spyderco passarounds we send them back to the factory for checkout and sharpening. If a knife is supplied by a maker, we would have to understand and plan for it's maitenance. That's another area where we would need guidance from the maker.

Hopefully passaround particpants understand that by the nature of a passaround, you probably will not get a perfectly sharpened knife unless you are first on the list.

As far as predermined amount of time for the passaround, the original idea was that it would always be available for passaround, forever more or less. But again that open up possibilities, because for example, I could see someone saying "I'll "rent" you my xyz knife for six months for $xxx after which you return it to me." That might work well too.

I will start a new thread in the passaround forum, the thread mentioned above has a subject that no longer reflects it's content.

Edit: Here's a new thread, feel free to jump in with suggestions:
