I see people here talking about how great Paul Bos' heat treatment is. Does Buck have Paul do the heat treatment for all their knives, or is it only done on the more expensive knives?

Paul actually works for Buck knives. But he has it in his contract that he can take outside work and he does. He has heat treated many items for me. Many other custom makers use him also because Paul knows his stuff.

Many other HT guys specialize in just one or two steels. While there are some steels that Paul flatly refuses to HT he is skilled in the art and science of heat treatment better than perhaps anyone else I have ever met. The teachers teacher so to speak.

He is also a great guy that has some pretty cool hot rods which is one of his hobbies.

While Bos was located in California he wouldn't do any oil-quenched steels due to environmental restrictions. Maybe some of his previously excluded steels will be permissable in Idaho.

Thanks Jeff. I had not thought of the environmental issues with CA. I'm sure you are right on. I always knew when he refused it was not because he didn't know how because he said on a couple of occassions "no, we can't do that one,' but never got into why. It came across as if he was restricted so what you said makes perfect sense. Perhaps he is doing some S90V now? That, as I recall was one he said no on.

Yep..Paul knows his stuff to be sure. I have three Bucks & while they are great knives, I find them very hard to sharpen & when sharp they do not seem to hold the edge for long. It is probebely my sharpening skills at fault here & not the Buck. JMO. :(

I asked him to heat treat CPM S90V, CMP M4 Rex and M2 and he sad it require too high temperature to heat treat and he need special run and it will cost me more, but when I sad OK I will to pay for my perfect knife he finaly sad "no" anyway. I send him A2 and ATS34 and it works wery well.

Thanks, Vassili.

Yes he does all of the HT for Buck's knives.
Vassili, I think part of it is also that he couldn't do it with anything else. The S90V would hold up everything else for a while because it had to be done all by itself and that would cause him to get further behind.

So does he do all of Buck heat treating?

I don't think he does any heat treating for Buck. There is no way he could keep up with their production.

I think he's in charge of their quality control of the heat treating. When a new batch of steel comes in, he tells the Buck technicians what they need to do, to get the best performance out of that batch of steel.

My understanding was that he ran the show. Perhaps he is fazing out. But then again he may just be there primarily as a professional consultant for the numerous other 'metal guys' there.. I know that Buck calls him one of their 'greatest resources' though.

The last time I spoke with Paul he said he didn't think he would ever retire but that he did plan to slow down.

Paul is pretty great at what he does. I dread to think where people would be if he did retire.

As I remember Paul Bos do himself premium steels for Buck - it is always his logo on that knives

and 420HC is done under his supervision.

Thanks, Vassili.

Paul heat treats all of the tool and die stuff for Buck Knives, as well as some of the specialty knives

He oversees the Buck heat treat facility, but someone else actually does the work.

Paul has a full time job heat treating custom knives with his own equipment.

One of the reason Paul is hooked up with the Buck family, is because he grew up with Mr Buck. For many years, he had his own heat treat facility, and did all kinds of production heat treating for all kinds of companies...........slowly he gravitated into custom knives, finally making it his full time job.
