Medford, Oregon: I visited 5 shops in Medford/Central Point area. Some dry holes and some not. A few pics of the interesting ones for your amusement only (I have no connection to any of the shops).

Buck 110 custom, custom sheath and nothing else with it. Initials on blade. Blackened damascus (I can't explain blackness)? Nickel silver hardware and pearl, very rich looking with terrific feel, scales:

Fixed blade, HD Shovelhead etching, display box:

Off topic: Folding WWII machete, CATTARAUGUS = mfg (NY, USA), liner lock with metal sheath/blade cover (bakelite handle) in working and unpitted but dirty condition:

The bargaining aspect is a key to pawn shopping experience. The asking price in hundreds, in above order, 3, 2, 1. I haven't bot any of these.

Did buy a new 444 red with advertising on the blade. $20, Idaho stamp. Perfect condition. Needs soap, water, dry and lube.

Seems like most pawn shops in my are don't have ANY knives, the few that do tend to have a handful of Gerber stuff that came from across the street at Wally world.

Nice finds!

Thank you Russ.

The shop keepers are pretty kind to me. One even opened a couple glass displays and told me to please handle anything a wanted to get ahold of. There were some Randalls, a $250 thrower I'd never seen before, and a few spendy Striders in one of those cases. I had free rein.

I'd never handled the linerlock machete. Interesting to me. Made on contract for the federal govt. during the war when pocket knife production stopped to support the war effort. Quite a handful.

Your area shops may not have any collectible knives because the collectors are in better financial positions than those in this neck of the woods. Rich, black gold etc, Texans as they say. We have to whip our weight in mangey Beaver just to trundle thru the woods here.

The folding machete was made for the bailout kit on military aircraft. A few years ago I was researching ones made by Camillus and found out other companies made them. I have seen them pop up on the bay but they go for a high price with the blade guard.

I've read that the folding machete was made by Imperial and Case as well as the Cattaraugus pictured above. A mint condition one can go for $200 I hear. I'm considering offering $50 later today for this one as the pins are intact, no cracks in handle, no major problems with the blade, no rust or pits, the liner lock functions and the guard is complete. Also, I noticed that the blade folded, in a workman-like manner, with the guard in place.

I would like to see a complete bailout kit. What was the inventory of one I wonder. Can a complete kit be found today?

When I watch "Bridges at Toko Ri" with W. Holden, I know that this was Korean era, I get cold shivers and a sense of doom as he scrambles for his life in the mud after being shot down. It makes me wonder how the pilot's bailout kit has changed over time.

Thanks for the photos Oregon . DM

My pleasure David.

I've been cobbling the pics together with Paint and Photobucket editing. Not my usual easy/quick edit software that is back at the ranch 300 miles north of here.

Knives not seen: Two dot 110 with correct sheath with sharpened blade and a little wobble when open but beautiful wood and brass. 119 with correct sheath in like new condition. 300 series slipjoint with carry and use condition.

Thanks Oregon . Will we see these on the Sunday Picture Show ? What year is your 119?

Tomorrow is a travel day. Then work my night job so I can work my day job on Monday.

The 119, from a pawn shop, was something I noticed. Not old. Only bot the 424. Slept thru my last buying opportunity this afternoon... Funny. I really like the folding machete from the survival B24 pack. Next time.
