pekiti tirsia
the most saught after system of the filipino martial arts.
some people have said that it takes 15 years to
learn the system. this is simply not true.
as i tell my students "one could complete medical school in less time"
Seriously think about that for a min. what we do is give you the basics, and
teach you how to unlock them so that you have understanding of what it is that your practicing.

It's not true that it takes 15 years to be competent in Pekiti-Tirsia kali. You only have to spend the usual 2 or 3 years in it to become exceptional, and then of course a few months to a year to be competent. I guess I'm talking about my teachers and their peers here in the Philippines, I guess. I don't know about the training of a lot of Pekiti guys in the States under PTI and Tuhon Bill McGrath, but in general, I hear it's qualitative and so time duration need not be an issue.

BTW, how many PTI members are on this foruM?

trained for only 3 weeks (everyday @ 4 hours each day) and it was worth it! i'm still practicing the drills.

Hank, pare, that's nice to hear. Are you in Singapore right now?
Ginunting, pare, why do you say you've finally arrived at the style for you? Have you trained in other kali/arnis systems in Germany?
BTW, can we post pics here from our computers?

During my childhood, I trained Shotokan. As a Teenager, i began to train TKD for seven years. After that I changed for boxing and muay thai.
Bored of this empty hands systems, i was looking for a blade oriented system.

My first attempt brought me to Balintawak, but the teacher was very bad. I think he was just a fake! :(

Then i visited a Doce Pares teacher in berlin, which was a hard hitter and very aggressiv, but there was no chance for a regular training.

After watching the "Dog Brother vids", finally i discovered PTK! :)

does anyone here know Jack LaTorre? where does he teach Pekiti-Tirsia?

I have this email correspondence with his student Chris Renz, of Rochester, NY. Anyone here who knows him or does Pekiti out of Rochester? :)

I know Jack. He's a damn good fighter, real intense, and he's helped understand the system a lot just by answering my questions and giving me a tweak here or there in my pekiti.
He's also a great artist, from what I've seen of his drawings. I don't know where he teaches, though. If he makes the EYD 3rd set seminar in TN, I should see him in Sept.

What are the traits that set Pekiti Tirsia kali apart from the rest? Is it the knife tapping and other drills and stuff? Is it the legendary ferociousness and aggressive hard-hitting of its practitioners? Is it the insistence on traditional bladed weapons orientation? What makes it the MOST SOUGHT AFTER FMA in America?

BTW, did you know that Pekiti Tirsia kali is virtually unknown in Metro Manila and in 99% of the Philippines? It's known only among a few circles in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental (Tuhon Gaje's hometown) and in Metro Manila (my teachers and their small circle of no more than 10 practitioners).

Go to : www.pekiti-tirsia.com
There is an outline of the sytem and a brief desription of it there. The site mentioned in one of the above posts is an excellent one as well for information.
For me, P-T is a very aggressive system. The knife tapping is most excellent and intricate, yet simplistic in it's nature and ability to use (once trained). This makes it very combat oriented as the skills don't leave when it's time to defend oneself. The very aspect of training for multiple opponents helps you learn to deal with the problem of tunnel vision when in a critical incident, allowing you to remain focused and alert.
Go to eskrima digest and do a search for past posts on pekiti. You'll find a wealth of knowledge there as well. I think this is the site, if it's not, just search for the digest on your searchengine.

I hope this helps to answer your questions.

I think all the Pekiti Tirsia kali guys in the United States and Canada should give training in the Philippines a try. They will experience first hand the culture and the intensity of training that made Pekiti Tirsia kali outstanding compared to most FMA styles out there, especially if they proceed to the Visayas region of Bacolod city, Negros Occidental where Tuhon Leo Gaje lives.

There are no terrorists there or rebels. They are as far away as Chicago is far from Alaska.
