People Explain Why They Are Afraid of Pocket Knives

I don’t get how people are afraid of an object. It’s the person wielding it they should be concerned about. So for a friend to be afraid of it makes no sense to me.

Interesting theory. People are afraid of knives because knife people carry ridiculously tactininja knives and flick them open for no reason like adolescent boys.

I disagree. People are bemused by knives because knife people carry ridiculously tactininja knives and flick them open for no reason like adolescent boys.

Now, back to blaming the "sheeple."

I don't understand how people know what an "assassin's" blade looks like? Have they personally seen one? Do they have an assassin friend that showed them their blade?
I guess it's just a fun criticism of a "tacticool" style knife.

People are afraid of everything these days.

I was handed a beer bottle at a family party the other night and it was not a twist off so without thinking I drew my waved CQC7 and used the back edge of the blade to pop the cap (lightning fast) and the girl that gave me the beer jumped back in shock. Then she started laughing and said it was all too fast to even get scared... so what worried her is that she'd be dead before she knew what even happened if I went for her instead of the bottle.

I had to reassure her I was not going to happen as I was planning on making a mockery of the open-bar at her wedding this July, so I'll need her around at least that long ;)

Then I had to show a few guys that it was not an automatic, and how it worked. So the fear is really just a lack of understanding. A couple of the non-knife guys said they want one. I told them where to buy.

"So, at the family picnic, I deployed my XXXL Stabinator 2000 to open a bag of chips. My grandma rolled her eyes at me. I hate sheeple who are afraid of knives."

pssst. She's not afraid son. Grandpa fought in the war, had 5 kids with her, they were happily married for 60 years, and all he needed to carry was a pen knife.

My latest trend in knife buying and carrying is orange. I truly believe when the sheeple see that orange handle they are given some peace of mind that I'm carrying a "safe" tool. I don't do it strictly keep them from freaking out as I like orange knives, they are certainly easier to find if dropped or placed on the ground.

Sometime after the 1970s or '80s, the once-common carrying of simple pocketknives among boys and men fell out of vogue, for whatever reasons. Now the concept of carrying any kind of pocketknife is an alien concept for most people, even a traditional pattern. Unfamiliarity with the concept, and the idea of a knife in a pocket sounds scary to some people.

As for fearing an object as opposed to a person, how do we know that he or she didn't have a traumatic experience in their past involving someone armed with a knife? Because if that's the case, in some instances seeing a knife pulled out of a pocket *might* act as a trigger.

Some non-knife people are scared of knives and some are not. My co-workers are mostly non-knife people, but they're used to seeing me using all kinds of knives at work. Some other people might be afraid at seeing a SAK or small pen knife used to cut an apple. Again, the unfamiliarity some people have with carrying a knife around.

IME, most people don't really care, as long as you don't go whipping your knife open with a dramatic flourish, or whipping out a CS XL Voyager to cut a tiny, loose thread off your shirt.

Some people who see the wave freak out at first, some just think it’s really really cool lol.

And some girls see a guy whip a big knife out of his pants to open a beer and then start laughing.

I'm just suggesting that the reactions people are getting to their knives may not be fear. All I'm doing.

Wow. Wrote that without seeing the previous post. Awkward!

Good timing :)

What I was getting at is that we SHOULD use our knives in public. The fear is just surprise and misunderstood curiosity from many.

I forgot to mention two of the non-knife guys that I showed the workings of my CQC to did buy. One bought a Mini Commander, the other bought a ZT 0620.

So thanks to my overkill bottle opening we have two more guys in our fold.

From the movies, of course. :D

I also like orange, though these aren't my public use knives

I chose a nice baby blue mini-grip. I've never had a negative comment about it. I do get surprised when people don't know how to operate a folder's lock, to the point I carry a slippie to hand out these days.

I've found opening a knife either 2-handed or slowly takes all the surprise out of it and now I'm just known as the guy who always has a knife or 3 on me. One of the gals likes to poke fun at the belt sheath I carry the barlow in but it's all in good fun. More are impressed with how fast the knife cuts something because I keep em sharp and that barlow is slicey.

Like bikerector I open larger knives, in some situations with both hands (and choke up on cuts). I also carry an SAK, or traditional folder. The color as noted matters blue, red, etc less impact. No orange in my folders so can’t speak to that.

Not that you can’t do something, just sometimes better to know the people and setting, then educate.

I had a coworker who had witnessed a stabbing, and while they were unharmed themselves, the possibility they could have been stabbed was very real. They were scared of knives because it took them back to that moment. I wonder though how many average people have had experiences like that to make them fear knives.
