I'm looking for recommdations for pepper spray products for my wife and daughter.

My primary requirements are: (1) reliability; (2) ease of use; and (3) effectiveness/strength of the product.

They may want both a keychain product and a regular size canister.

Thanks!

I do not like pepper spary for women's self defense. A few reason, most women carry an item like this in thier purse. Which makes it impossible to deploy in a moment of crisis. Next, most women don't know how to use it properly, takes practice. I know I have sprayed them myself a few times and had the wind blow it back into my face, not fun.

Lastly, when women are attacked the attacker usually attacks from behind, it is hard to reach into the purse, pull it out, and use it on an attacker who is on your back and taking you down.

Just my opinion, good luck.

The Cold Steel ones look interesting, although I haven't yet tried them. Most of the pepper sprays that I have gotten eventually dry up or seem empty after 6 months or so.

amon--Those are valid points. I've already told them, and they understand, that pepper spray in a purse is useless. So they've agreed to carry them in their hand, ready to use, anytime they're in a questionable situation, such as in a parking lot at night, or anytime they see someone who makes them feel uncomfortable. They've also asked for models that you can practice with, and I've seen a few of those availalble, including the one Scott Free kindly linked (thanks Scott!). I've persuaded them, in the past, to take practical self defense classes for women offered by the local police, and will continue to do so.

I don't have much experience with pepper spray but have been looking into it a bit. The Mace company has a pretty good selection. They have a type that comes out as more of a stream of jell and can reach distances of 15 feet if I remember correctly. With jell you won't have as much of a "spray back" problem. They also make practice devices as well as bear sprays etc.. Kimber (makers of fine firearms) also has a line of pepper sprays.

I bought my wife and daughter the pepper spray that can be carried on a key chain. I've told them both to carry their keys in hand when going to their cars or whenever they are out. However, when I inquire as to where their pepper spray is I get a "it's in my purse" response. It's not going to do any good in their purse. Those small stun guns might be an alternative. I've considered those.

Böker stocked a full plastic case for pepper spray its fairly well made but not a luxury item, trapdoor safety cap on the top that prevents accidental discharge, wire pocket clip allowing for bottom up carry which can be mounted on either left or right hand side. The inserts I believe in 2009 were "MK-6 FIRST DEFENSE" coloured RED pepper spray. My rusty German reckons the label claims a 38% capsicum solution!

Also it doubles up as a fist load, the internal can will not compress or deform if you use it as such within expected tolerances.

Here he is, mine is black plastic though

Sabre and Fox are the big hitters when it comes to pepper sprays.

Some companies sell inert training units of certain products. Get some so they will know how the spray will work and what it's like to actually use it. Package will always say what sort of spray and distance it has but it's best to see it in person in my opinion.

You want to avoid 90% of the products available, including FOX and Saber, for your wife and daughter. You cannot use this stuff indoors or on a windy day.

I love Mace PepperGel, but if you fail to clean he nozzle with hot water after use it will clog and will not fire.

Mace Pepper Foam is the best cannister product. Easy to use, you can see where the stream is going so every simple to adjust aim. No safety switch to deal with and has a flip cap to prevent accidental discharge. Can be used indoors. Wind will blow it off course, but you'll see where it goes, and it will not blow back in your face. Get the 2 oz can, as the 4 oz is too bulky.

Kimber Pepperblaster Guardian Angel is a much better product. Since seeing the new version I like it better than the old one. Looks like a little red plastic squirt gun with functional sights. 2 high volume shots of gel propelled by a pyrotechnic charge at very high velocity. Best product on the market right now. They are about $40 each and you can get them on eBay.

I do not like keychain spray. Only one I can recommend is the ASP key defender. It requires training, but it is reloadable and inert test cartridges are available.

Personally, if you want the best value, you can get 2 cans of foam for the price of a Kimber. Forget about the keychain spray. They need to learn to carry the foam in their pocket and be aware of what is going on around them and they'll be fine.

The only other thing to consider about the Kimber Pepper Blaster is that it is somewhat gun-shaped. It can be a little dangerous to be holding a gun-shaped device if the police roll up.
I do want to get one for the home though.

I'll point out that Sabre also gas foam (I have it on my belt right now) and it works decently. While it won't get you as bad as spray, it also takes a little bit longer to work (less intimate contact) and needs better aim since it isn't as volitile.

I also used (and experienced) freeze +p and that's Nasty stuff. Also check your local laws, some places have laws determining spray strength.

It is clear red plastic. Doesn't look like a gun at all unless you paint it black or it is dark out.

tyr-shadowblade--thanks for the recommendation on the Kimber--I've seen it advertised in Rifleman. I'll check it out.

But you do hold it like a gun, and a lot of self defense situations happen when it's dark :p.

If someone grabbed one out of their pocket and pointed it at me quickly, they would be digging 5 .38 +p's out of their corpse.

Consider also a crowd-control sized version. I carry one in my vehicle thats about the size of a Pringle's can. Delivers more devil juice on the target, which is not a bad thing.

Have you seen the Snody Crisis Card? Not a spray, but it can be a pray with proper training

My daughter wears it everytime she leaves class in DT ATL - and loves it - only had to use it once so not really economically feasable to most

Yeah, but bad guys (and girls) won't spend fifty bucks on a Kimber when they can buy Chinese gas station pepperspray for five bucks.
