Is it a wise idea to use pepper spray indoors? I've been told no by a LEO, but I'm not certain what the general consensus is.

is someone coming after you? Do you need to protect yourself hopefully in as non-lethal a manner as possible? Then it is a fine idea to use pepper spray whereever you are, providing the prevailing wind is favorable.

Indoors is actually better because you are unlikely to have wind, while outdoors you may have to spray someone without having the time to think about the wind and you are more likely to get a dose of your own medicine.

Depends, indoors Ballistical stream YES, fog NO! NO CS/OC mixtures. IN house use a stream so u can aim, don't use a fogger because u will have a massive amount of irritant particles floating around. Outdoor,Car, frontdoor? get the Fire extinguisher fogger type. In the house , only the stream types. Remember that with a stream u can spray it on your hands and rub it in the guys face, with a stream u will have some light irritation and sneezing when u stay in the room. With a fogger it's unbearable to stay inside. As a women if u ever should be attacked for an attempted rape, u can as a last measure, when he holds your hands so u can't spray the can at him, spray on your own cloths. OC attacks mucuous membranes , mouth, nose, eyes, AND genitals, so spraying these parts with OC will make the rape VERY unpleasant for him. U will get hit also but an OC attack goes away after 30 minutes, rape doesn't. Also important for females with long hair, wash your hair after the use of the spray; The particles are very fond of hair due to static electricity, and u might wake up at night crying because u forgot to wash your hair. Take your clothes off asap after the use of oc and wash them. Get an inert trainer, or find someone u love and who will be prepared to be sprayed, so u can see what the O.C. does to a person. Keep a running hose of water so he can wash his face constantly. Try to spray in the face in a Z motion starting above the eyes and down and even into the mouth.

Stay safe

I spritzed a guy in a food service area, and arrested him without further incident. No one in the vicinity was apparently affected.

However, about 20 minutes later, while booking the guy, we got a call from an Oriental student who was calling from his cell phone inside the rest room adjacent to where I'd sprayed the guy. He caught a whiff of the pepper spray and wouldn't come out of the john!

Foam yes, fog no.

I was eating at a Chinese restaurant one time, when a braindead acquaintance decided to test her pepper spray under the table. Half the people at the table started to cough loudly, while the rest of us at that table and the other diners were wondering what happened. A commotion was starting, but luckily the coughing died down before people freaked out.

There was no apparent effect of proximity on the chance of being affected. Since the spraying happened under the table, it was probably air drafts that brought the stuff up above the table.

I use it indoors all the time :D It clears my nose very well after sipping too much beer. Spray some of that stuff lightly up your nose, you'll begin sneeing right away, 2 or 3 times, get a tissue paper and wipe your nose clean. Pepper spray is very effective in this regard.

Thirteen star, O.C sprays work very good, period. I have used the stuff extensively in my LEO career. I have been sprayed a few times, a few times deliberate ( we need to get sprayed before we can carry the can, and "cop fun"), and have been hit a few times during apprehension a suspect. there is always some contamination with OC, foam the least, then stream, then fog.

If u never been thru the ordeal u think u are going to die when they spray it in your face. But u get "used" to it after a while, the floating particles just form a nuissance. If u know the effects of the spray u know what is happening, so they aren't so frightening.
O.C. has very strong psychological benefits, when hit direct in the face, your eyes close automatically, they start to burn extremely painfull, your nose and mouth start to run, u can start to vomit and your airway gets restricted untill u can just breath enough just to stay alive. All these factors combined transmits a gaint "shock" to the nervous system of the target. His brain receives massive pain indicators and he panics and wants to get away from the spray.
If u spray yourself a lot u will feel the same pain, but your brain will know, "hey i am not going to die, this stops after a few minutes and within 30' everything is over. Stay calm, keep breathing and relax". i know my collegues who spray at each other as "fun" or spray on their sandwich and stuff!

Just get a good can (FOX) and go to your backyard. Spray with it , stand still and u will feel the effect in a low level by air contamination. then u can spray and run thru the cloud. If you are really tough ask a friend to give u a short blast in the face.

When u know what the spray does u will know what the BG will feel when he unexpected gets hit by the liquid in his face. Don't threathen with the spray, keep it hidden untill he is close and he forms a real threath, and then spray the whole can in his face! don't stop spraying u will nedd to get a new can anyway so why waste good O.C.

When he is down go to te police station, or run like hell.

I remember I tested some cheap brand O.C. spray outside.. I tried to shoot a squirrel in the tree.. nothing happened to the squirrel (probably missed) but I got a little bit in my eyes.. I had run to the bathroom with only keeping my eye opened with my hand.

why would u test it on a squirrel? was the squirrel attacking u? What goes around comes around ! :D

yeah.. I'm fom New york city.. so we don't care much for animals here.

:p

 I sprayed a guy once that was getting ready to hit me with a quart size beer bottle, didn't notice the ceiling fan going full blast overhead. Boy did we all get a good dose, but it did put the guy down also. Heard about that one for a long time. ;)

Loki88 is absolutely correct. If you use OC that streams, you're less likely to cross contaminate others and yourself indoors. I use OC on the job a lot and with a little practice, you could get pretty surgical with your aim. But damn, eddie500,...a squirrel? :(

btw mwerner, when you wrote Oriental student, you've really meant to write Asian student right? ;) .

OC spray is kinda hand grenades.
If you're within range, it gets you too.
It also does the job. I've used it once in SD. Turned back a crazed druggie like he ran into a wall.
I was usiing one of the ASP Defenders. Keep my keys on it.
