I recently ordered a perrin shark, it arrived in the mail today and im already in love with it. The thing is that i dont know quite wether its a mid-tech knife or if it is actually made by boker. also i dont know the steel. Mine didnt come with a lanyard on the knife however it did come with a paracord necklace that was adjustable.

Any info would be appreciated.

It is made by Boker, and since the listing doesn't say Boker Plus, I'm guessing it is made in Germany. The steel is 440C which is a fine steel for a neck knife that might be exposed to more sweat than a regular sheath knife.

I paid around 65 shipped. I still dont get how come some places the knife is advertised as mid tech if its made by boker, my understanding was that the blanks were laser cut and then fred himself finished them. if there isnt any hand finish i dont know why they would sell for 95 dollars on other sites like blade art.

Im glad that it is 440c thats one of my favorite steels and im unfamiliar with sandvik once i hear the words chinese i just kinda tune out.

I'm almost positive that Boker does not make these. Boker is just the distributor. Perrin still makes these himself. I remember reading about this a while back.

Retailers charge what they think they can get for their wares. That would be pretty cool if Fred did finish the blanks, but I'd be surprised. Then again, I could be wrong.

As ibute21 already stated sandvik is a Swedish company that makes some pretty respectable steel. I like 440C myself, but my only real experience with it is a custom with a Bos HT.

hmmm swedish you say? just shows what happens when i stop getting on the forums for a few months.... sigh steel snobbery just isnt my thing, i remember when 440c was "THE" super steel, then s3ov with HT by guys like paul bos, then zdp 189 was getting used by william henry..... i just dont have the time to keep up with all of it anymore :( i still like 1095 and alot of custom makers favor 440C so im glad its what im getting.

I am just trying to figure out whether or not it is midtech, it really makes no difference to me as i own a really nice full size custom bowie by mr perrin the thing is i just want to know what it is that i have in my hand, i can easily see it being mid its really got alot of life in it. The sheath maybe not so much. Id love to do a review sometime as i dont think fred perrin gets enough play on this forum.

hi to all
just for you have some details
the midtech sale by boker is not product by boker

i don't have any product or design in colaboration vith boker
for the midtech 2 steel i use for griffe shark and kiriashi 440c or 12c27 the neck bowie is only in 12c27

Been thinking of picking one of these up for a while, looks like a solid little piece. Glad I now have the chance to say that to the inventor himself! Any size references and commentary on the draw speed compared to a La Griffe?

I unfortunately have at this point only handled the shark, however i have handled a very large variety of concealable bladed weapons and the shark is very accesible to be quickly deployed. I have a small peice of 550 chord attatched to the handle and that is what i use to draw the knife i carry it hidden almost completley behind my belt. a quick tug of the chord and my pointer finger finds the hole naturally locking the knife into my grip.
Also the the knife can be held reverse with middle finger through the hole and the blade draped across the ring finger, a punching motion in that manner could cause grevious damage to an attacker.
The knife has proven to be a great utility knife as well its small size and concealability lend it well to utility tasks in public places where it is not prudent to be waving a blade around.
The knife is insanley sharp out of the box, and really the only problem i have had is that the sheath is just a smidgen to loose and i feel it would not retain it during neck carry, this is a minor problem and im sure could be easily remedied but i like the relative loosness as i can subtley and quietly draw the knife. i dislike neck carry for a variety of reasons. but mainly its very hard to discretley lift your shirt its kind of a red flag.

Im impressed enough that im going to get a custom shark from szabo and take advantage of the d2 steel. besides mr perrins work has a certain life to it that cant be explained.

Its always humbling to hear form the designers themselves, its what makes bladeforums so awesome.

I just made a shark prototype and wrapped the handle in camo & orange paracord. But this forum won't let me post the pics. Don't know why. Guess I'll have to quit this site. Too bad I am a decent craftsman and love neck knives, bowies, throwers, etc.. Any ideas to help me load my pics. ? Thanks for your help guys.

Just ordered mine. I agree that it is awesome that Mr. Perrin responded personally to this thread. Shows that he cares. Can't wait to play with it and see how "carryable" it is around the neck.

As for the above poster who "made" a shark prototype... uhh... Mr. Perrin is reading this thread, dude.

Hello Fred,
Are you re-working your bladecraft website? I went there last week and noticed that it is not really there anymore, but I also noticed you have many items on Laci Szabo's website, but not those from your "Urban" line, like the "kitten" or "teddy bear" knuckle items. Are these going to be made available again?

with respect,
Mike
