I'm looking for something to keep me a little cooler whilst running and hiking. I've seen all the junk on tv that people like Sharper Image make. Have any of you guys gotten any kind of cooling device like one of the cooling bandanas or anything? What did you think about it? You guys recomend anything? I'd prefer not to spend $70 plus shipping for some kind of 4 pound device.

Wind. LOL, had to say it.

No seriously the only cooling device I've tried camping was one of those fans attached to the top of a water bottle. It works surprisingly well. The fan blows mist at you.

I always thought the shaper image collar thing looked super bulky and heavy.

The bad part about them is you don't acclimate to the temperature, so as soon as you stop using them, you get hot as hell. It's like walking outside from an air conditioned house. The outside temp feels WAY hotter by comparison.

The main thing I'll be using it for is for whilst I'm running in the little gym in my neighborhood. There's no AC in that room and in this weather it gets twice as hot in there as it is outside. I'd run outside, but my shins hate pavement and they war with each other when I try to run outside. I can never get as good a workout. I noticed some of the neck cooling wraps are supposed to work for over an hour. I really only need it to work for about 45 minutes.

Got a running trail near you? Best thing I ever did for my knees, feet and shins was to get of the pavement and on the trails. Usually cooler under the trees as well.

Hmm... do a google search for "Cooldanna". They look pretty cool. They make bandanas, visors, vests, hard hat pads, etc...

A couple of ice cubes rolled up in a bandana and tied around your neck so the ice is on the back of you neck. Old Texas trick!--KV

+1 for the cooldana thingy. I have one and it is like personal AC, and its not just a comfort thing, it does actually cool your core temp, important if you cannot afford to take breaks, its like added sweating. gotta remember to keep hydrated. I used mine for a full summer, loved it, didn't pack it to camp last summer and got sick a couple of times, I was hydrated, but still overheated. I'm cold blooded I think, I really don't regulate my own temp well, odd for a skinny guy, but I get overheated easily if I'm not careful.

another vote for the icecubes in a bandana, or just a wet bandana tied around your neck.

when i go running on really hot days i take a strip of towel out of the scrap bucket and wet it with cool water and drape it over the back of my neck down across my shoulders onto my chest. very refreshing...

can you run without your shirt? i notice a feeling of about 5 or 7 degrees just taking my shirt of when running, allows the sweat to evaporate more i think, and just lets the skin breath more in general...

find a resale shop loose-fitting silk shirt. Keeps the perspiration in for a bit, allowing cooling, and dries quickly.

If you hydrate, sweating is really a good thing.
