This was a rescue from a heat treat mishap. The tang warped significantly (my fault, I ground the taper very thin and the laminate didn't like that.) and the tang developed a crack at a stress riser. The blade had not been ground so was unaffected. Solution...turn it into a partial tang! Because it was already hardened, I had to drill 2 1/8 inch pin holes using ball end carbide endmill and my mill (worked perfectly!) and cut away, square the tang (easy enough with some judicious use of the edge of a belt on the grinder.) Because the tang was also already tapered, I had to come up with a solution for that...a tapered PARTIAL tang, using micarta. I am happy with how it turned out. I may end up keeping this one for myself. The handle is thin, but comfortable for EDC tasks, or skinning, or cutting my steak (like tonight.)
Decided to also push the limits on the sheath with a cross-draw design and lizard skin inlay...worked out well but took quite a bit of time to hand stitch.
