I was hoping someone here may have some knowledge about Peter/Wright Anvils. Were they manf. in the U.S.? Any info on the quality? This particular anvil is at least a couple of hundred pounds and is 60+ years old.

Any info appreciated

Thanks,

Geoff

If it's in good shape and priced right, you'd best snag that one.

Danbo,

A freind of mine is retiring from farming (he's 70), the anvil was actually his fathers and is still in great condition. I assumed it was probably of good quality but am not aware of the manf.

Peter Wright worked for Mousehole Forge and left to start his own anvil making business at Dudley, England. The Mousehole anvils were welded together from several pieces. Peter Wright conceived of making anvils in two parts and obtained a patent for the process in about 1850.

Peter Wright anvils are english and are marked in hundreth weights. ie..an anvil marked 125 would be 112 + 2x56 + 5 or 173 lbs. They are considered to be very high quality anvils. I would say yours is older than 60...

Waddie, if you don't snatch that anvil, I'm gonna have to come up there and smack you about the head and neck region. :D :)

Peter Wrights are generally good anvils, although I have seen and repaired some badly abused ones. grab a 1" ball bearing when you take a look at it. drop it from 12-18" above the anvil facein several spots, if it bounces back to your hand, or nearly there, the face still has it's temper, sometimes you can also hear a bad spot under the face. but if it looks good, GRAB IT
