Pheer 454 grinder Anyone using one?
Getting ready to pull the trigger on a 2hp model
Good bad Ugly if you have one chime in!

I love mine. Super smooth, well built. Finish wasn't the best but I fixed that with a 4 dollar can of spray paint. Jose is also a great dude to work with

I would recommend putting it on a tilting table, it's super useful.

I have one and love it. Jose is amazing. I had a VFD fail and he sent a replacement in advance of the return. I highly recommend 2hp and VFD.

Trocky Awesome setup... Did you make the table?
Exactly why I am looking at the Pheer it is easy to tip sideways. Had a KMG for 16yrs was still going strong when I cleaned out the shop.
But there were many many times I had to "grind blind" and the tilt will eliminate that

I use one as well and really like it. It's definitely a good option for a relatively inexpensive 2x72. I would guess that a TW90 is much more versatile but it's also 2x the price haha!

I just bought a 427 from Jose. It's a very good grinder.

I did build the table. I almost didn't incorporate the horizontal option but I am super glad did. It is so nice for a lot of things. I would definitely recommend making the height adjustable as well. If I were to build another one, I would probably make the tilting mechanism more similar to what you see on the tw-90, just in the table instead.

Sooo How Smooth and True do they run?

CSB U R Right :D
Had to get a real job and while it is a good one I spend my off hours doing zip
Thinking about all the shop time missed... So stay tuned

Cool! I'm about to pull the trigger to upgrade to a variable speed direct drive myself. The option of flipping to horizontal is a great option. I've narrowed my options to Esteem, Pheer 454 or the new North Ridge. Good to have options! Does anyone have opinions on these or are there other options?

I got an Esteem a month or so back, and I couldn't be happier with it. Since it is my first 2x72, I can't compare quality, but it runs smooth and is a very well thought out piece of equipment. No clue if its comparable to a Pheer or North Ridge.

We have had our esteem for about 6 months and I can compare it to some others and we could not be happier with it.Its smooth as silk and no joke its easy to forget its running its so smooth and quiet... Now as to the thread question Ive heard nothing but good about the function of the Pheer grinder and Im sure it would work great for you..

Coop,
I currently own 4 2 x72"s A Coote, A Hardcore Products, a Grizzly G1015 that I may be selling if there are any makers here is S.Cal interested?

And the latest being a Tag 101 From Chris, Worth every penny,

Does the 90 & 45 trick and has slots to use for a work rest etc in both positions. He also sells a great small wheel adapter that holds the belt down flat so you can really use the diameter of small wheel without belt interference http://www.wilmontgrinders.com/Pages/default.aspx

I had a KMG 2 x 72" and by the time I did all of the improvements it needed I was close to buying a ready machine with quality bearings. Sold it.

Rob uses cheapo bearings on the KMG, I had the idler bearing burn out after only a couple of months.

Only cry once! But the best you can possibly afford.

There are two grand daddy systems that most all of the machines mentioned fall into.

There is Bader and there is Burr King.

I have an Esteem, I also have a Hardcore.
I prefer the Hardcore myself, but nothing wrong with the Esteem.

Buy the best you can afford, Grinders last forever more or less and the total cost is amortized over however many years you want to make knives.

The advantage of the Esteem/Pheer/etc is that the KBAC VFD is a stand alone unit, so it can be used to drive a second grinder or 9" disc sander, assuming you wire up the appropriate male/female plugs.
The Hardcore VFD is built into the Baldor motor.

That's the same 3 I've been looking at too. I think Darren Sanders should be getting a North Ridge to test out and then hopefully report back to the forum.

I have had mine for 18 months and use it a lot for a "garage guy". Works great and customer service is excellent. Jose help me with a VFD wiring question when I installed it. I have a 1.5 hp motor. Would probably go with 2 hp if had it to do again. Although I am not sure if a home, single phase, 120V circuit would support 2 hp well.

If you are referring to that machine that Gent is sending from China to him I suggest you get a 2 x 72"
MANY more belt options at a better price per Sq inch.

No Rhino, the Northridge is a great piece of kit. They really approach things with a 'spare no expense' attitude, and built several pieces in-house cause there wasn't a high quality one available in the marketplace!
The other beast you should take a look at Lcoop is the AMK: http://amktactical.com/epages/3c926...26a50-9aba-43a5-9571-098ee03f1288/Products/33 I've got one, and Allen will rig it out however you want, for example I had a 3hp Leeson motor and a 12" contact wheel put on mine along with a KBAC nema IV enclosure for my VFD drive. You don't have to have different tool arms with different fixtures with the AMK--you just pull a pin and pivot the arm around and you go from the flat platen to the contact wheel. For other tooling, i.e. a small wheel attachment you just pull a couple bolts and slide the flat platen off, and bolt in the small wheel attachment. The AMK also has a plate that flips the grinder horizontal---the other grinder I am really impressed with is the Northridge--my second grinder will be one of them. They are really just getting rolling, and it'll be prolly like another 6-8 weeks before they have all the options set to ship out with their grinders, i.e. the horizontal flipping plate, the small wheel attachment, complete motor control systems. If you are trying to focus on value the AMK is the way to go--to get supreme quality you should hang out til the Northridge has what you want. I feel that the quality of the Northridge is gonna equal the TW-90 and the Hardcore Maximizer. To the OP the pheer is a good value piece, but I think the AMK beats it. The Esteem is one I like as well, bit I would also choose the AMK over an Esteem.

Good luck whichever way you go--let us know what you go with and may it help you create some knives you'll love!!
