Went to go buy an old used US Made Schrade Old Timer Sharpfinger, for my first foray into more traditional patterns. I know a new SS MIC Sharpfinger can be had for about $15, so I got the guy down to $10. He then threw this unknown folder in with it, so I threw him an extra $5.

I get home and examine the piece (fine, I was playing with it in the car ride home) and look up the stamp on the blade. Super worn old handle, looks handmade (irregular/non-machined/asymmetry), with a heavy working patina.

How'd I do? Also, is it too late to enter this into that Patina thread?

Welcome to the Schrade addiction. Great first foray into the addiction.

Theres nothing handmade about that knife my friend, that's a great knife, there was a bit of discussion about these types of Pruners a while ago, Sure the blade has had use, but just loo at that lovely Ebony, the knife has fancy Bolsters - Double fluted ( forgive me there are different descriptions of this) - seems to be a fairly old knife - I would say you have done very well!

Only reason I perceive it as being "handmade" is because of the butt end of the knife:

I'm doing some digging through old threads, but haven't seen anything much yet. If you have the link handy, send me the right way!

A U.S. made Sharpfinger at $10 is a steal. Even at $15 it would have been a great deal. I see them go for well over $30 almost daily on the auction site. Good score! And that ebony on that pruner looks great, very nice dark black.

That butt cap is fairly common on those pattern of knife. Just has a lot of years on it, but it definitely looks original to me.

IMO, great score for $15!

A really good score! If your Sharpfinger came without a sheath, they are currently plentiful on the bay. That one looks to be late 1980's to mid 1990's vintage. And in pretty darned good condition!

Yeah it was a great scoop!
The Butt plate like Glenn said is original to the knife and Factory!

As best as I can tell, both knives were users, being found in an old toolbox. I feel that they should be used, though I'm not going to go stabbing them into tree trunks and putting them through hard use. I'm sincerely amazed by how well the slip joint still snaps into place with smooth action - definitely well built at the time of manufacture. I think I saw someone post old 1930's Simmons Hardware catalog pages, and this same model appears in them.
