So recently I was gifted a pioneer x from stuntdouble
And I am sitting here fiddling with it. I really am kinda digging the scissors
And I have decided to throw it in the pocket for the foreseeable future and see how she does.

But I forgot how much thicker the pioneer x is with the 3rd layer compared to the 2 layered pioneer. I did, until recently, have a farmer but the layout made it especially difficult for me (I keep my nails short) to access the saw..so I let it go, but I find getting to the scissors on the pioneer x to be easier

But I just throwing it out there, who out there edc's the x version? How's it working for you?

I was considering doing the same as I just acquired a Pioneer X.
It is a bit of an increase cargo-wise, so I’m interested in seeing your thoughts and experience with EDC-ing it.

I don’t like the opposite side nail nick for the scissors. On 91mm and 84mm, Victorinox used to put nail nicks like that on knives with the previous style can openers, but stopped in the early 1950s and flipped them to the other side and generally coincides with the Victorinox patented can opener.

Have you ever tried it in a knife slip? It seems to keep the knife up right and feels like the weight is distributed better.

Since I can’t help myself from tampering with my SAKs ;) I have done one of my 3layers with G-10 scales. That made it 15mm total. My 2 layer Spartan is 13,8mm so you can shave a few mm’s off a 3 layer. If you are dead set on the alox you could take it apart and shave on the inside…

The difference is so small in theory but the regular pioneer / soldier feels like slim knife in comparison and therefore a lot more comfortable to carry (especially with pouch).

Honestly, I found three layers to be sort of a sweet spot for me. As long as I have some way to keep them vertical in my pocket, I find that the bulk doesn't annoy me as much as it would laying down in my pocket.

I carry all my saks in a pouch, on my belt. Usually horizontal. The challenge is to find a comfortable pouch thats a good fit to the sak model.
With no pocket bulk, I find the thickness increase insignificant. Its all about having the tools I need handy. Scissors are frequently used.
The poineer x is a great edc for me.

If you are used to 2 layers, 3 feels like a bit too much, until you get used to it. Give it time and you will.
I enjoy carrying my camper, which is a 3 layer cellidor, thicker than your 3 layer alox.
Alox feels more like a hunk of metal; I wonder if that is what you are noticing.

Lol nah
I much prefer my pioneer or wenger si to my cellidor models

This!

If I augment my trusty little classic with something bigger, odds are its either my Wenger SI or my florist knife gets dropped in a pocket. The classic is my only non alox SAK I own. My other SAK's are the alox bantam, cadet, and SI. The florist knife is nylon scales that should be Victorinox's standard material. Light weight, and rugged as a rock.

In the past I EDC'd a Farmer (3 layer Alox). Liked it a lot but no longer find regular use for a saw. Scissors are a must have for me, so a Rambler (58mm) is my current EDC to which I occasionally add a pioneer, if more blade may be needed. That combo negates the Pioneer X... although the 2023 model has been very tempting. o_O

Yeah, if you are willing to carry a Classic with your keys, it really opens up options with a larger SAK. I have the camper with my Classic, so no need for a thicker model with scissors.

If comparing to mods is a consideration in this discussion, I prefer a Cadet X for the slim factor. The ‘right hand’ nail nick is just a small bonus/preference.

I’m not a big in-line awl user, so the choice is easy enough. But getting a drop-in back side awl is easy enough for me and would look factory with no awkward spacers.
