Anyone know of a place to get decient 3 step pulleys? I am going to take the plundge for a KMG but need to cut some corners to afford it. I know the pulleys they sell are good but if I can avoid paying $76 for 2 pulleys at this time it would be great. Now Im on the hunt for a used motor. Thanks.....

I understand wanting to save $$, but I would buy them from Rob. You will have a great machine, but you don't want it off-balance and rattling. It's sort of like putting retreads on a Ferrari--defeats the purpose:)

John

pretty much

what happens if you buy pulleys for 40 bucks and your not happy

then your out 40 bucks and buy some new ones

besides there is a reason why rob would sell them and i doubt its because of the price

I fully understand. I had absolutely NO intention of spending this much for a grinder when I have never even made a knife in my life, BUT. I just can't get over how nice that machine is and I want it!

I just got one too

I have made a few knives when I was 16-17

thats, it
quite the plunge but well worth it

If you want to take the chance Ace Hardware has step pulleys for around $12 depending on the size but they aren't balanced.

Huge plunge but I have always loved knives. Alls I do is buy, buy, buy. I have always wanted to try making so I think now is the time.

Hi jll,
If you can swing it, have Rob send one of his good step pulleys for the grinder so you don't have to track down a 3/4" bore size. Then, hook up a cheap and easily available 2" pulley on your motor. You'll be able to slow the machine down, but it won't have the same top speed. Anyway, there's a real good start and as you use it you'll decide if it needs additions/changes in the future.
Take care, Craig

you can get decent pulleys at McMasters-Carr --- http://www.mcmaster.com/ --- that's where I got mine and I paid $55.00 including shipping for 2 of them ( they work great). I put a step pulley on my motor 1HP 1750 rpm from Harbor Freight Tools for $75.00 with extended warranty, it is the farm grade unit so the motor is sealed from dust gettting into the motor.
The RPM rates are about 1000 --- 1500 --- 2100 ---- 3000. All I can say is it works for me and I like to keep it simple when I can. I also used a board for the base plate and a hinge heavy enough to handle the stress of the motor weight to make a self adjusting motor mount that lets me change the belt speed by lifting the motor and moving the belt to the desired pulley step and then letting it swing back down to put tension on the belt. very simple and effective, for $150.00 I put a good veriable speed motor drive on my belt grinder and saved about $800.00 to put on some other knife making tool.

John,

Did you get the step pulley at McMaster? I couldn't find any reference to step pulley. Lots of other kinds.

I called them and Middletown Ele. motors over on John St. today but both were closed. I think I might just take the plundge and get them from Rob. I will try and find a used motor to save a few.

If you can live with a 4 step pulley, Surplus Center has it in 3/4" bore.
Look in power transmission section.

Thanks for all the info. I am going to start my search Tuesday morning. Thanks again.

This summer I bought a KMG. It's well made and I very happy with it. To save money I drove down and got it, from Mississauga Ontario. Also, if your an out of state resident, you don't pay Ohio tax. Another saving on a 1300.00 item. Buy Robs pulleys, don't scrimp on the the necessary.

Merry Christmas

Step pulleys canbe found at http://www.mcmaster.com/ on page 973:

Die Cast Zinc Step-Cone Finished-Bore V-Belt Pulleys
Change your speed by moving your belt to a different step. These pulleys are for fractional horsepower (less than 1 hp) motors. Use with A-Type (4L fractional horsepower, A-, and AX-section) V-belts. All are furnished with set screw; 5/8" and 3/4" bore sizes also have standard ANSI keyways. To Order: Please specify 1/2", 5/8", or 3/4" bore size

Here's another link to a site that has step pulleys also: https://sdp-si.com/eStore/Direct.as...htm&OVRAW=Pulleys&OVKEY=pulley&OVMTC=standard

But the pricing was not available at this time.
