Plate Quenching?

When you folks use aluminum plates to quench blades for heat treat, do you leave them in the stainless wrap or remove them?

Mike,

I leave them in the foil pack. I figure by the time I get them out, the benefits of quench plating would be lost. I'm doing it with all my blades. After I get them down to a temp that I can handle with gloves, I remove them from the foil and put them between the plates again to ensure they are straight. Seems to be working for me.

Yes, leaving them in the foil is the best way. Of course, all blades in the foil must be exactly the same thickness. If you move swiftly and get the blades between the plates fast, the transformation will be locked in. Once the color is gone from the blades, you can quickly open the packet and get the blades out-then press them again.
I check them for straightness before I re-press them.
Don't forget to temper them while they are still quite warm.

Stay Sharp,

RJ Martin
