PM2 being simultaneously made in S45VN and S30V?

So, I have seen the PM2 go in and out of stock, in just one place, to know that they are re-stocking both S45VN and S30V PM2s. Does Spyderco plan to run both steels side by side, or phase out S30V? Also, what about all the other "knives like the Military, will S45VN be on those, too? Unless Spyderco is just selling their stock off in peices?

I was also thinking about this because I go the new PM2 wharncliffe in S30V (I thought it was an older, discontinued model, then I found out it was just released after I already purchased it from a guy), and I was thinking, curious how a 2022 PM2 would be in S30V, unless they are still running that specific steel. Particularly in the camo color, I have noticed.

Personally, I am happy about this if it is the case, more steels around is good.

The wharncliffe PM2 is a dealer exclusive, and S30V was likely still the base steel when the exclusive was ordered. The satin version dropped in early 2021, and DLC was probably ordered at the same time, so those exclusives have been in the works since at least 2020, perhaps 2019.

A few months ago, I heard a rumor that they had to temporarily go back to S30V because of supply issues with S45VN, but I have no idea if that's accurate.

S30V is a little bit better than S45VN anyway, so get while the gettin's good.

Actually, I did hear that S30V had the up on edge retention slightly from S45VN, but that S45 had some other quality, besides stainlessness, that made it better than the S45VN. I would love to hear some thoughts on ths. Do you know any specifics as to this?

But, I did indeed. Because of all these great 10V class steels like that, Maxamet, K390, and other various more "exciting" steels, I was just seeing S30V as basic, standard, a souped up 420HC. But I think that might have been an oversimplification. I have three knives in S30V now, two Yojumbos and of course the Wharnie PM2. Got them comparatively late compared to other steels. But that is why I love Spyderco, for being able to provide us a ton of steels.

S30V has a bit more wear resistance, and S45VN has a bit more corrosion resistance and toughness. Opinions vary, but I definitely don't consider S45VN to be an upgrade to S30V...more like a zero-sum tweak to justify a new grade designation.

S30V is pretty decent overall steel at the hardness Spyderco runs the PM2 at.

I do find it's factory edge a bit chippy, but after a good sharpening it seems to go away.

I have the same experience with Kershaw's S30V as well.

I am only guessing, but I would think S45VN is less prone to chipping, but personally don't have anything in this steel type to verify.

Well, from what you guys are saying, I am glad I got the all-black S30V PM2 Wharnie, that'll be a great cutter, and I wanted a black PM2 after I switched the scales on my base S45VN black G-10 to titanium.

Love Wharncliffes. And S30V seems less chippy in the long run than S90V, though I haven't cut with the last one. Wonder how the S30V will do after sharpening, have not tried that one yet but all three blades I have in the steel have straight edges.
