Hello folks, just curious as to if any of you all have a Pocket Bushman? I've been looking at them for a tough no frills pocket knife. I like that its so flat and reminds me kind of my 30+ year old Spyderco police nice and flat and sleek. What do you all think about it and do you have experience with this knife? Thanks,

I carried mine at work for years. For a working knife, it's not bad. Definitely gets the job done, but has it's drawbacks.

Pros:
Good edge retention.
Strong lock.
Flat in the pocket.
Rock solid construction.

Cons:
Blade rather brittle.
Not the best ergonomics.
Rough opening.
No one-hand closing.

Kinda balances out, but definitely things to keep in mind.
For what it's worth, I have personally used a hammer to baton mine through wood, across the grain. But I also snapped the blade when cutting a soap dispenser that was double-stick taped to a wall, and accidentally applied too much sideways pressure and she snapped like a twig.

But I like it enough that I immediately purchased a replacement.
Been a long time, but it was a terrific carry for summer camp maintenance.

If you want something faster to deploy, I've been carrying a Range Boss on and off. Not as beefy but probably easier to find. There's also the 4Max Scout which might be the best bang for your buck when it comes to hard use folders.

I like them. own a couple. its a roundish handle setup, not exactly flat. pretty neat setup and lock. I wouldn't carry one for daily use though. bit cumbersome closing.....but easy enough........

Thanks guys, for the info, I guess for the cost of the knife it's probably worth it if nothing else just to check it out. Much Appreciated.

I had a CS Pocket Bushman about 10 years ago. It was one of the most rock solid folders I ever bought. Unfortunately I never got accustomed to the unique closing system, which I found a bit "scary" and sold it.

Rock solid knife, altough not the most comfortable for extended use..some people carry a leather strap along, to wrap the handle.

Probably the strongest lock ever made. I was lucky to get a CTS BD1 version.

Get one, you wont regret it :)

It’s a raw, no frills pocket knife. A slab of sharpened metal with a bombproof lock. An “end of the world” knife.

I would imagine it’s the sort of knife these people would carry:

Thanks, Guys and I hear good things about the SR1 Lite. I was just looking at something a little different and its cheap also. I already have both of the green handled SR1's in S35VN so I'm good there. That is a good price though on the Lite as well. 👍

check out the CS black rock hunter on ebay right now, its different and pretty cool. should be able to acquire for the same money as a bushman.

I often carry a Pocket Bushman when working in the back yard, and have been known to carry it when out and about. Large, tough blade. Nigh impossible to break the lock. I've even used it as a pocket machete with good results. I'm a fan of the design.

Two things I will advise.
1) Out of the box it is tough to open and close. I put powdered graphite on the moving sections of mine, then added some mineral oil to make a paste. It helped it wear in. Until worn in, it's tough to open one-handed. But I open mine one-handed all the time, and I'm an old man.
2) To close it safely requires a specific technique, taught by FortyTwoBlades FortyTwoBlades in the YouTube video below. I use that technique every time and never have had problems.

Dang! Thanks for the video and info on the graphite and oil looks pretty cool and it's a nice size as well. 👍

I noticed after watching a few reviews one 2012 where the guy mentioned his pocket bushman was in SK5 and another video where a guy mentions BD1 steel. My question is how many different steels were used in the making of this knife over the years and also which steel would be the best, toughest less chippy? Also has anyone noticed any difference in the overall quality over the years of this folder in the making? Thanks all,

I'll have one of these this Thursday in the mail hopefully a whopping 29 bucks. Thanks to all you enablers that helped sway my thinking much obliged.
