Pocket clips on traditional pocket knives (How To?)

I've got a Case large yellow CV Trapper, and I'm planning to put a pocket clip on it - mainly to make it more accessible with my gloves on. It'll be a nice clip, not some super-modern looking one; I'm shopping this out to find the right style to go with a traditional slipjoint.

Has anyone here done that, and if so, maybe put up some pics? I'm curious to see how a traditional will look with a nice clip.

I don't think it would look right either, and if you need a folder while wearing gloves, there are lots of larger traditional alternatives out there. However, check with STR, he has done a lot of clip mods, he might have a few designs he could work with you on. Good luck.

A leather sleeve with a clip on it might do the trick and not alter the knife.

Since I have never held any style of knife with a clip that did not feel better without a clip, I would opt for the pocket pouch with a clip ala William Henry.

While I've done it believe it or not, I have to agree about some of the sentiments shared here. I mean far be it from me to tell someone what their needs are but me personally I wouldn't clip a slippie. There are other traditional knives I feel differently about but most are lockback types and I just feel they do better away from pocket lint and grit rolling around in the lock mechanism but someone mentioned the other alternative and thats a pouch. I carried my Coats Toothpick in a pouch since day one and it still didn't keep it from having problems though. Go figure. Anyway, here is the only Trapper I ever did. The customer seemed to love it. I can't say I'm looking forward to doing another personally though.

I agree with STR clips on slipjoints seem strange. I also think the the knife murse is strange also :) Just put it in your pocket.

How about --

That is my set-up for when I don't want to carry my trapper in my pocket or need easy, un-hindered, access to it.

I think the clip on the trapper pictured above looks rather odd but Hey!!! To each his own.

Moving this over to "Maintenance" so Chris can get some additional replies to his question (whether some of us purists like it or not. ;))...

Thanks for all the responses, guys. I may put this on hold for a little while and look into the leather sleeve idea - but that clip STR did sure is purty.

And I kind of figured this one wouldn't get too positive a reception among the 'purists', as Blues calls us. I'm surprised there wasn't more responses like, "You're combining matter & anti-matter! You'll destroy the universe!" :p

Thanks for the move, Elliott; I didn't even think of the Maintenance & Embellishment folks. (Or, uh, maybe you're just trying to avoid a riot in Traditional? :D )

It may not look weird at all if the clip is well integrated into the knife, instead of just bolted on.
Making the clip out of brass and sticking it under the bolster would be pretty sleek. Different for sure, but not that out of place.

tabeeb,
It's apparent you have never worked on a knife. Brass is too soft to work as a clip, and they can't be "slipped under a bolster." "Bolting" one on is about the only way to do it.

I think a leather sheath with clip to house the slipjoint is the answer. I think the clip is too much on it. However, STR did a great job on that yellow handled knife. If not, get yourself a one hander such as a Spydero paramilitary, or BM Griptilian, which is operable even with a glove. I carry daily a slipjoint, a modern folder, and a multi-tool.

I'm not impressed with keeping traditionals traditional for it's own sake. Which is just another way of saying you must conform to your knife's limitations because, well, just because.

I say make the knife conform to your needs instead. If that means a pocket clip, then so be it.

This one is meant to clip to the inside of the pocket....the soft clip is easy on pocket material....

Far easier to just anodize the titanium a gold color to look like brass which is not that hard to do really.

That's true. I've never taken apart a or built a slipjoint.

By "slipped under a bolster" I meant between the bolster and the liner, and held inplace by the pin.

If this isn't possible I'd like to hear why.

+1
It's your knife; make it work for you.;)

Anything can be done, but putting a clip between the bolster and liner would require a total rebuilding of the knife, and a possible redesign.
