Pocket Slips/Sheaths

I've never used a pocket slip/sheath before on account of my typical slip joint choice being of a rugged and not so "fancy" variety. It's typically a GEC F&F Bull Nose or Bull Buster, a relatively cheap Case trapper, or an SAK Cadet. They get thrown straight in the mix with all of the other stuff in my pocket. I have some higher quality knives on the way (still GECs, but for me an upgrade), and I'm just wondering if a lot of people use slips to protect their traditional knives and if so what are a few good ones to look at.

Or if I should just say screw-it and treat them like every other traditional I have... Interested in what you guys have to say on this subject. Thanks in advance.

I would throw my GEC's, S&M's into my pocket but as I ride a motorcycle on the daily, I'm afraid of them slipping out. That and pocket lint or dust can get trapped in and provide gritty action. I don't mind a beat up scratched blade at all but the internals of a slipjoint with their walk and talk, backspring etc, matter greatly to me. Thus the Pocket slip aids in every way. I wouldn't hesitate to put a Farm and Field into a pocket slip either just for their fantastic snap.

That being said, Mike at CKO just released some pocket clipped sheaths, KSF makes one that molds nicely to any knife with time but is a bit large and the very simple thin slips of leather pocket sheaths that GEC provides is actually one of my favourites. No frills, just enough to protect and keep it in place.

It's a very personal decision. If carrying a knife loose in your pocket becomes a stressful thing, or in uncomfortable in any way, then pick a sheath. Otherwise, there's no real need for it.
I carry a custom slipjoint and never bothered using a sheath...but that's just me :)

I think its a good idea - while I usually carry a pocket-sheathed fixed blade, I'd EDC a folder more often if I could find a some appropriately sized pocket slips. If anyone replying to this thread has some good recommendations of makers/suppliers, please post them. Thanks!

I like keeping my knives in leather slipcases. It keeps them looking nice and keeps junk from getting in the knife.

I personally like keeping mine inside the pocket but up out of the mix and easy to get to, especially those large knives that won't lay flat. Sometimes if in skittish company even set them in a boot or on a belt.

I just dedicate my left front pocket to carrying my knife. That way the entire pocket operates like a slip/sheath and it doesn't cost me a dime. :)

I don't like carrying my knives in a pocket with coins, keys, etc. Carrying a knife that way puts a lot of wear on a good knife. That was fine when I was a kid and carried a $12 Case, but, not now days.

I wear shorts in the summer and a pocket sheath keeps my knife where I want it, instead of wanting to slide out when I sit down. During cooler months, I wear jeans and carry my knife in a watch pocket most of the time.

The Sheath is from PocketKnives4Sale, the TC slip was made by Gunstock Jack, and the Primble slip was made by Esnyx. I use them all frequently.

I use one of the scagel sheaths from kniveshipfree. It works fine for my knife. I use it because I also carry my keys, notebook and a metal pen clipped in my right pocket. I prefer to keep my knife in good shape and would like my scratches to come from use not just from being in my pocket :)

I use a William and Henry clip-on pocket sheath for my pearl handled knives. All others go into a pocket, that I try not to put anything else in.

I've gotten to the point that I carry all of my pocketknives in a PocketSlip, even the crummy ones, the beaters, because it eliminates that "rock in my pocket" feeling. It tends to distribute the weight better. Protection is almost secondary at this point.

I use them all the time. Besides protecting my knives they keep them from slipping out of my pockets. Worth every penny and worth the extra time it might take to access one. I haven't lost a knife in years and years. I lost a few before using a slip pouch. Knock on wood.

Here's some of mine. There have already been a few bladeforums dealer members mentioned as a source, another is A.G. Russell.

I carry several at a time, the Case Stockman Purple Haze is kinda large for the pocket so I made a belt sheath for it, for my SAK black Alox Pioneer a soft slip sheath to protect the Alox from losing it's nice look ;)

edited to add, those ones Primble posted up from PocketKnives4Sale with the soft hair insides, I think they would cradle even the most expensive knife comfortably and not mar any surface on the knife, plus they look great ;)
Where my sheaths are not for safe queens and you can get some rub marks due to the tight fitting sheath as it relies on friction fit and I wouldn't recommend it for those higher dollar carries.

After reading a lot on these forums, I feel it's time to contribute a bit [emoji4]

Actually I'm not totally sure this is the right thread because this is more of an alternative instead of the real deal.

Because I couldn't get used to pocket slips and a belt sheath attracts too much attention in a Dutch office environment, I constructed a 'partition' with a small piece of leather to be able to carry both my multitool and a small knife in my watch pocket:

The best is when you find pants/shorts with built in coin pocket inside your pocket. Like a built in sheath. I have a few leather slips from KSF, from Mike's previous run and a couple of others that came with one knife or the other. I also like the felt pouch that comes with Canal Street knives. Those pouches stay in place in your pocket. Typically though, I just carry my knife in my pocket with my keys.

You must also have some tight fitting European pants as well to keep those in place :)

I'm not wearing skinny jeans or anything like that [emoji16]

It fits snugly in regular jeans.

To clarify things a bit: I'm talking about the coin pocket 2Dead is referring to.
