Hey guys my little brother and my best friend are in the process of joining your ranks and I want to get them a new folder for when they go to work. Which are you guys using or recommend for a freshy

They will get the most mileage out of a good multitool, followed by a sturdy folder. Something along the lines of a spyderco or a ZT.

I have carried pretty much everything under the sun (obvious exaggeration of course), but right now its the Benchmade 710. Whatever agency they join will likely have a policy on what can be carried so you may want to check first. Barring that, you cant go wrong with anything from the established brands. I find at least a 3.5" blade, quality steel, grippy handle, and ambidextrous carry options a must (for me). Dont rule out a small fixed blade like the Izula, again, check the policy first.

Spyderco Delica for a folder. I've carried a Buck 102 in kydex as a boot knife for over 15 years.

Spyderco Endura for the last 20 years. A lot of officers are beginning to carry the Ka-Bar TDI on the weak hand side.

Good multitool is a great thing to have around. I would wait until they are post academy and see what their agency allows and is open to. I

The spyderco police is nice but large unless you have a big hand. They don't open as easily as a smaller folder.

I would recommend a spyderco Manix.

Most of the boys in blue I know looooove Emersons and ZTs. Both brands have an almost cult like following in my local LEO community. Might want to wait until they actually hit the force, then ask them what all their buddies at work carry.

I bought two ZT 0360's. The knife is a collaboration with SKD Tactical, and is basically a ZT 0360 with a lighter, faster assisted blade. Workmanship is excellent. I gave one to my SWAT-cop soninlaw; he loves it.

Lately I've been carrying my CRK Umnumzaan, but the knife that I carry the most is my Benchmade 915 Triage. Good size, great quality, glass breaker, seat belt cutter - I really feel like I'm prepared for anything when I have it. It's not too expensive, either.

I have the orange one, but there is a black version available too. My sergeant liked mine so much he got the exact same model, even the same color.

Pics from the day I got it (before I had the blade etched):

In South Africa I have seen some Policemen carrying "concealed" Cold Steel Push Daggers on their "weak" side LOL.

Maybe look into a glass breaker/seat belt cutter tool.

Gotta be honest, the last thing you want to do is try cutting someone's seat belt with a sharp knife if they're panicked or trapped upside down.

I carry my Demko ad10 to work. But im a knife guy. Most everybody else has a mix of benchmade autos, cold steel folders, a couple kershaws, and manix 2s.

A cheap SOG flash 2. Had it over 5 years in all types of weather.
Its cheap so no concern over losing it. The adjustable clip allows it to be worn point up in either pocket. I prefer knife pocket carry in support side. The assist opening made sense for me in this support carry position. The stupid safety on it did start to slip to the lock position, so i simply filled it with something adhesive in the unlocked position. The safety really imho was not needed.

I've carried many different knives over the years in patrol. A cheap $10-20 from Big 5 works fine. I use my cheapo knives at work because I got tired of loosing good ones and or damaging them. When you use a knife to pop security screens and gates you increase the odds of breaking the tip and have a couple times.

I'm right handed so I do carry an Emerson Karambit in my left pocket as a last ditch back up. My thought is if I am ever in a fight for my holstered 1911 I'll pull that waved Emerson out and slash a fool up real good. Realities of patrol sorry if I offended any timid ones. Been shot at twice, but no one has tried to take my gun yet.

For dress events like graduations, promotions, or funerals I carry a nice Sebenza.

As much as I like expensive knives, I never carried one on duty. Depended on where they will work, they will get into a scuffle. One of the last things I wanted to lose, was a $100+ knife. I carried a crkt m16 full size folder. I used it for multiple tasks including using it to pry wood off of a window. I would look under a $70 or so for a good knife. Plenty out there

I carried the crkt in my side pocket under my holster, and usually a gen 2 cold steel recon for SD in my back right pocket. Also carried a leatherman wave on my belt (used that the most)

I met a LEO for our local collage department and he was carrying a Benchmade Infidel in the single edge configuration. We talked for a while about knives and apparently he had quite the collection at home.
