You definitely want a wooden shaft, they just work best. On the butt end, just go with whatever looks nice to you, really. I just started shooting over the summer and I bought a lucasi for my first cue. Three months later I swapped the shaft for a thinner Predator. For a first cue I'd recommend spending no more than $50-100. I spent more and regretted it later when I found out what I liked in a cue. Get yourself a Players or Lucasi. They make quality beginner's cues. I'd give the Walmart ones a skip, they tend to hit worse than a house cue.

Go for a wooden butt, a lot handier when the bar fight breaks out :D

Seriousley, I prefer a heavier cue its a lot easier to control and easier to break with as you can get more momentum with it. I have never used a graphite one but I dont think I would like it
