I went riding in the mountains with a group this weekend and got to talking about knives. A new friend of mine brought out a knife and asked me my opinion, (oh boy) The knife was a fixed blade clip point no markings on the blade, not very sharp(said he got it that way), nickel bolsters and diamond wood scales, pins were not fit or peened well. ok but not fancy sheath. I told him "This would ok around the camp..." then he asked me what it was worth
"about $50-$80"(being generous) dooooh he paid $350....... I handed it back to him and asked him if he wanted to but another

hmmm.. would it be possible to get a picture of that knife here? I'm kinda curious as to whether he's been had, or it's simply a collector's item that we haven't seen yet.

I'll call him and get the knife. I'll have to scan it and Email it to you. I can't post pics. I'm pretty sure he was had. He's not too worried, he's had the knife for a while. I would expect a $350 knife to have no flaws in the joints or pins and something other than diamondwood scales. Don't get me wrong I like diamondwood for certain applications, but when someone asks me to make a special knife for them I tend to use something a little more special. My current project is a folding trapper 2 blade, red heart scales, sterling silver bolsters that will be engraved, inlayed sterling silver monogram.(I work for a silversmith so I get a good deal on engraving. gistsilversmiths.com if you want to look) Sold it for $125 am I to inexpensive? I didn't grind the blades and I'm a beginner.(made[put together] about 6 knives) I'm also real picky, detail oriented.

I too, am intersted in seeing this knife.
I hate it when someone gets suckered, if that is indeed the case here.
Danny, You da man.

Seriously, if he was indeed suckered into getting that knife for that price, what a waste.. But, no use crying over spilled milk, as they say. I guess you can tell him to charge it to experience, Don. We all go through that during our lifetimes. Perhaps it would be wise to invite him over to the forums, so that he'll benefit from the knowledge gained and shared, much as most of us did.

I'll still send the pic to you. Partly for my education also.
But can't I sell him a knife first

LOL!!! Of course! By all means! Sell him a knife first!

I'm sure whatever it is, it'll be a LOT more knife than what he got in the past. That'll also be a good way to introduce him to this wonderful (and sometimes expensive) art of knive collecting.

Man, that has to hurt.

I'm glad I asked you guys before going out and randomly buying something (okay, I knew what brands were good as production knives already, but still)

I couldn't get any pics of this blade. I do have the makers name, but I'm not sure it should be posted as I can't be 100% sure of the quality of the blade. I have just written of MY opinion.
I wouldn't want to create a problem for this maker without proof. IMO I believe that my friend was overcharged for this blade. I talked m friend and he said if he was taken then oh well, because at the time he was billing this person $750 per month for services his company supplied and felt obligated to buy the knife,(probably some business details I am not aware of) Anyhow he is educated now and will seek advice before spending money on any knife.
??What is the consensus of the forum?? should I publish the makers name?

You could post it on "The Good, Bad, and The Ugly" forum, or you could email it to those interested. -AR

Don, let's put it this way... Chances are, after what I've read, he must have been had by the person who sold him the knife, not the manufacturer of the knife. Coz, like you mentioned earlier, your friend was charging them $750 for something, and that he was obligated (huh?? for what??) to get the knife?? Maybe the person wanted to get some money back? hehehe.. and this might be the only way. But however you looked at it, he's been had.

Now, if that was a custom-made knife, the price *might* be worth it, unless the workmanship was shoddy. Since we don't have any pics here, we can't really tell.

I'll tell you what though, you can send me the pic via email-attach (just like the pic of you and Smokey, hehe) and it doesn't have to go public if you don't want to.

Speaking of which, nice pic!
smile.gif
you want me to post it on the BF Picture Forum which I started a while back?
smile.gif
You can also see us there, see the face behind the name.. lol..

Let me know.

Dan

Hey Danny go ahead and post the pic. Thanks. I don't think I can get my friend to turn over the knife for scanning, He's pretty sure he was had also, but, he's not too worried I think he has more money than he should. LOL

The blade looks real similar to those sold by Jantz and Texas knife supply and the like. Anyone making and selling $350 knives would have put the time into signing his work. This wasn't signed and I don't think it warranted signing. sloppy work, but functional. My friend was on a ride and a horse got hooked up in his lead rope on the trailer, don't know how, the knife did its job and earned its living, cut that rope real quick. I'll e-mail you name and location of the maker if you want.
