I’m going to make my first press fit guard this weekend. My question is can 416 or 303 stainless steel be press fit? Or, would I be better off using brass for the guard. Thanks.

Yes you can press fit stainless. Use some JB weld to seal it up and you're good to go.

If you file your hole a little too big and you get a gap, you can always pein the face of the guard until it's nice and snug again. Then grind it flat again.

i taper the tang just a few thousandths thinner on the end so it will slide on, and make the slot the same width as the tang near the guard. makes for a good tight fit and a slight margin for error if your slot gets wider from squaring the ends of the slot.

I was taught to use a .002 press fit, the .002 undersize does not have to be the entire height of the guard.
Half of it to just more than half of it can be oversize for clearance,

I have a short video but don't how to get that posted up now without tapatalk and photo bucket.....

I expect 416 will be easier to work with than 303.

303 is sulphurized like 416 and machines easily.
