So we've seen the alcohol, oil, petrol, and gas stoves. We've seen the tin-can hobo stoves. We've seen highly elaborate hobo stoves. What if all you have, however is wood, a knife, and the outdoors at your disposal?

What sort of 'stoves' can be made with dirt, sticks, and stones? In my mind, the purposes of such a stove would be the same as any other: increase efficiency to conserve fuel, raise temperature of fire, provide more consistent heat, contain fire/heat to small area. Any ideas for primitive-style stoves or high-efficiency fires are very welcome :)

i have made a very simple sort of stove by digging a hole and building a grate of green sticks over it and building a fire in the hole. it worked alright, but it was very hard to fuel the fire.

in the future if i ever try this again, i think that i will dig more of a trench, so that i have room to get at the fire for fueling.

you could also build a little chimney type thing out of stones if you have the right kind of rocks.

i guess it is really regional...it depends on the materials that you have around you.

The next time you construct a fire pit, make it in the shape of a "Q"..by having a small nook that is measured to your cookwear..you can push the coals over into the nook and cook on it, and still have almost 100% access to your fire. I have used this technique since I was a boy..I think I got it out of Angiers book when I was about 11. Gene
