posted this in WS&S, rather than Gadgets&Gear, because it relates to water purification

I have been wanting a filtration water bottle for some time, for the emergency kit or G.H.B. (Get Home Bag). While I do also have water purification tablets in a sealed HDPE bottle in the FAK of the G.H.B. I like those for backup.

So I picked up the Pristine Filtration Bottle from MEC and tried it out.

The company (Pristine) is actually an offshoot of its larger company ADVANCE CHEMICALS, a well known local Coquitalum BC company known for its pool chemicals and water filtration kits (big ones for remote areas). They are close to my work too!

onto the bottle.....

Going by the package info the bottle is capable of filtering debris ridden cruddy/dirty water, and purifying 99.9% of Cryptosporidium & Gardia, as well as removing chlorine taste. The filtration capacity (amount of water the filter can treat) is 200 liters, however mine came with an upgraded filter in it, capable of 380 liters before replacement. A rep i talked to at the company also said that number included dirty debris ridden water, not just clear/clean water. Very cool. The bottle capacity is small (just .65 liters) but for an inexpensive emergency use bottle I do not really care.

I started by assembling the bottle and precleaning the filter (carbon dust) as recommended by the maker. In order to get water thru the filter and thru the nozzle, you MUST squeeze the bottle, there is no popping the top and spout, and sucking back a mouthful. Squeeze, drink, squeeze, drink. Again this does not bother me for its intended use.

I should note that the filtration takes place inside the blue filter, and NOT in the bottle. Dirty un-purified water stays inside the bottle, clean water comes out the spout.

Onto the filter, its really neat and very well thought it. There is a "backwash" silicone seal that allows air back into the bottle as you un-squeeze the bottle. . At the same time , a tiny amount of purified water also backwashes the filter with the air, this flushes (keeps dirty water/crud from entering the clean zone) debris out from the filter seal at the same time, every time. So it never really clogs or gets contaminated water mixing. (I would pre filter thru a hanky first anyways to remove leaves bugs etc etc). The dirty water , when the bottle is squeezed to drink, travels thru the sides of the filtration media/chemicals/carbon etc into the center of the filter, then upwards towards the spout.

I have not used the bottle in debris ridden water yet, that will happen next hike. I have however made a chlorine solution (3 drops chlorine bleach - enough to make .65 liters of water smell strongly of chlorine) to test the filter out. It works, I could not detect ANY chlorine taste.

While this Pristine bottle is not the Seychelle military canteen that i want, it works GREAT. 10/10 for well designed product, and its great that i can go visit the company anytime and chat about their products

Looks like a nice product. You did not mention it but the link says the bottle weighs 220 grams (about 8 ounces) and costs $26 Canadian (about the same in US $). This might be a pain for long term use but certainly light and cheap enough to carry as a backup for short term outings in case you have a problem.
