Pro-Tech Malibu scarcity

Anyone but me having trouble adding a Malibu to your arsenal?
I talked to Derek at Pro-Tech and he said I was in luck. They are being released to dealers NOW!View attachment 2152217

I have been seeing them get more available lately. Definitely a definitive knife, it's an exceptional piece.

They tend to disappear fast, and like all Pro-Techs, are released in fairly small batches. Pro-Tech is not a huge knife manufacturer like Spyderco or Benchmade. But if you have a chance to grab a Malibu, you should. A very well made flipper, imo.

Thanks for posting. Nice to know these are trickling out to dealers.. awesome knives!

This thread prompted me to search for any in stock and, just now, I was able to buy a Magnacut wharncliffe, textured black aluminum.. a KNIFE I've been wanting for quite some time.. a JOYous bit of serendipity indeed.. ;)

I too just searched….after months with no success. Thank you for your post! Mine is on the way.

Update: I’m liking everything about the Malibu! For me, size is perfect, button lock is fabulous, blade shape, grind and material are 10 on a 10 scale. And talk about grippy…….it’s my grippiest knife!

I’ve been contemplating getting one used, but only bc there’s so much hype around it and I’m a weak minded hype beast fomo chaser 😅

I’d love to hear y’all’s thoughts about why the mali stands so tall among others. I’m typically partial to multi deployment option knives, esp at this price range but I’m a big fan of PT’s textured aluminum as I love my runt.

Pls educate this (edit: Noob not moon) on why the Malibu is so special, and why ones like say, thr Mordax doesn’t seem to be nearly as coveted

Blade HQ has them right now. Pro-Tech cranks them out constantly. If you can’t find one, wait a week. Seems like they are pretty available all of the time. Not limited runs like other models.

I will be the voice of dissent, I actually like the Mordax more than the Malibu; and I own both. The Malibu is in fact a fantastic knife, I just find the handle too small for my hands and it is actually a bit narrow as well; for me it causes a bit more fatigue in my hand during actual use. I don't own the textured scale version, but because of it's slenderness; it's a bit slick when being put to work.

The Mordax fits me very nicely, it is much more ergonomic for me while still being quite slim in the pocket.

I've had mine for about 6 weeks, CPM-20CV Whanto (I refuse to call it reverse tanto lol) blade shape. Action wise, best flipper I've ever owned. Only my Cheburkov Strizh is better action wise, but its a front flipper, so different beast altogether.

I don't like the handles. If I could get CF or wood handles It would be a dream. M390/20CV/204p has been excellent in all the knives I've owned it with, and tracking down/paying extra for a magnacut one wasn't worth it.

I like the Malibu enough that I've considered tracking down one of the custom ones, though that is off the table now.

They seem to be spending much of the time and effort of limited releases at various knife shows. For example, back in February the released like 40 Malibus at the CA Custom Knife Show and those were all snatched up as soon as the doors were opened. Same at quite a few other custom knife shows.

Looks like if you snooze, you lose. I guess I snoozed. I'll have to watch a little closer.

Happy to say I managed to snag a Magnacut Malibu wharny with black textured handles off the Exchange today. I've been religiously watching my regular websites, and am signed up for email notification everywhere I could find. I'm looking forward to getting it. 🔪🔪

You’re gonna love the way it disappears into your pocket. Nothing not to love about it.

You can generally find the Malibu or any Pro-Tech release by searching on Google. They support many smaller dealers, so it's easier to find them there. I know of a dealer that has several in stock at the moment, but not sure what the rules are on posting those links in here.
Either way, Google will pull up the site. It's worthy to note that Pro-Tech releases things in cycles roughly every month. So things go in & out of stock at a fair rhythm. The Malibu, TR-3, & Godfather\son are the three models they generally make almost every release. You can watch their social media to see what's being released each month.
