I made a knife about 10 years ago and the gent who got it has never used it. He showed it to me and the mammoth tooth appeared to have shrunk but not the harder part of the tooth which now has ridges that are higher than the soft parts of the tooth. Has anyone else seen this and what can be done. It was stabilized by K & G

I know that doesn't help with this one, but it will with the next one.
All you can do is refinish all the pieces level.

Tell him it is the custom grip feature of a mammoth tooth handle ;)

Shrinking is caused by the resin and soft pulp shrinking. Not much to do to fix it without a lot of risk. I would leave it alone.

I also agree with Bill on using mammoth tooth. I have a nice slab for the base of my razor stand, and have made a desk set of pens with it as the base, but won't ever use it on a knife handle.

I agree not to use it. Have known that for a while but that is not the answer I can give a client. I agree with you Stacy that it is probably best to leave alone. My client will probably want to coat it with a lacquer.

You could flood coat it with CA, let it cure, and re-sand lightly, then polish. That would be about as far as I would go.
