Problem with UPS delivery

I ordered a bumper and hitch for my Jeep. UPS sent an e-mail that both packages would be delivered the next day between 2:30 and 6:30 PM.
The next day at 6:58 the UPS truck came and gave me the hitch package but couldn't find the bumper package.
At 9:25 PM I got an e-mail from UPS saying that the bumper package had been delivered and " Met Customer Man".
I went outside and looked and there was no package, and no UPS person "Met Customer Man" at 9:25.
I have had UPS send a e-mail saying the package was delivered before the package was actually delivered, so I went out every few minutes and looked for the package. The bumper weighed almost 100lbs, so the package would not be hard to spot.
Since the UPS e-mail said the package was delivered at 9:25 PM and that it "Met Customer Man" I was concerned that it had been delivered somewhere else. Also I had set aside time the next day to install it.
I called the UPS help number and finally got to speak with a live person. This person probably was in India. His English was terrible. I could not understand him so I turned the phone over to my wife. He asked for the tracking # and said the UPS delivery person would come over within 1-8 days to show where they had left the package.
After 10:00PM I went outside and the package had arrived and been placed next to the door, but the door bell had not been rung.
I have not heard back from UPS.
Now I know this doesn't concern knives, but what if I have some heat treated knives coming by UPS and this situation happens again.
Has anyone had a similar experience and if so, what did you do?
 
Yep, happens with UPS all the time.

I once was expecting 2 packages same day. One was delivered and I watched him drive to my neighbors and deliver a package.

I called UPS got hold of a person and asked if there was another truck coming today and the answer was no, so I asked then were was my second package.

The person checked into it and called the driver, a while later the same driver dropped off my second package. I am pretty sure it was delivered to someone else and he went back to get it.
 
Best advise and can offer you is to get to know your driver. In most areas it's the same guy delivering to your house. Introduce yourself, it goes along way when the driver can put a face to a name on a package. I see my driver almost everyday and we have become friends. I actually gave him a knife for Christmas. I don't ever have a package come up missing.
 
Many years back, I worked on Saturdays at a place I will call Tidewater Gold Exchange. They were a scrap processing company. We had boxes coming in and out all the time. One day the driver came in with a hand truck load of boxes and I signed for them. I was opening them, and one had $20,000-$30,000 in new gold rings and diamond rings, along with invoices from the supplier. I looked on the box, and it was addressed to what I will call Tidewater Gold and Diamond Exchange. It was to another business in the next town. I knew the owner there and called him. He came and got it Monday. He checked with UPS, and they assured him it had been delivered to his store.

Well, the UPS driver stopped by today to see if we had gotten the bumper. He couldn't explain why the e-mail said it was delivered at 9:25 PM and why the e-mail said "Met customer man".
Anyway, I got the package and UPS did follow up on my phone call.
 
Just last year I had a package designated as "left on front porch".
I don't have a porch.
Never did locate it.
 
i always spend a few extra bucks for signature confirmation upon delivery. that way the new ups guy on his second day cannot leave the package unattended outside, and if it went to the wrong address, it would not be my signature.

You would hope, I have had them leave it with no signature and actually have found a package left that was signed for when no one was home.

Go figure
 
When I build my shop I was waiting on 48 4ft led bulbs, high end lamps. Said delivered at front porch. Looked everywhere and nothing. Called and thy said oh yeah it was delivered. No it hasn’t I told them. The next day the neighbor came over with 2 huge boxes. Ups just ditched this in my porch a few min ago. Had my address and name but thy delivered to him.
 
Ups can be bad sometimes, but I’m glad that I never had many issues with ups. Recently the only problem I had is that my old teaching platform kept on showing that my order was in transit for four months even after it was delivered. I really wanted to find a good tracking platform for my future orders. Luckily, I was able to use (), and my next order was supposed to arrive in 2 months. Thanks to tracking winit I was able to track my order since day one. I would love to recommend this tracking platform to everyone how has a similar issue.

I know this is a super old thread, but the issue always comes up, so I thought I'd reply.

I really don't think it's the service itself that sucks, it's the local employees. The place I used to work, in north west Texas, had a great FedEx guy, and a great UPS guy. Both totally reliable and very rarely had any trouble.
Now I work in south west Texas and our FedEx guy is the WORST. Things get marked delivered in the tracking system, but they don't show up till a couple days later. Outgoing packages don't get picked up, etc.
The ups guy is great! Shows up, delivers things when they are supposed to be there, doesn't report them delivered until the actually are. Picks up outgoing packages, and he's a nice guy!

Try to develop a relationship with your local delivery guys, it'll make a big difference. Part of the problem here is that the local delivery guys (except ups) are all temporary employees. We don't get a chance to develop a good relationship with them, so they don't care about service.

Anyway that's been my experience, make em like you, and they'll be more likely to deliver when they are in a hurry, and it's raining cats and dogs.
 
I think COVID has really exaggerated the problems with the USPS since this post was made. No trouble with the UPS or Fedex for me, but as A.McPherson says, it depends on where you are.
 
I may get a package a day late or something occasionally, but considering my wife and I basically exist 90% via online ordering and delivery, we have a pretty acceptable track record.

Recently, I purchased a horizontal grinder (AMK-73) and was going to have to disassemble it to carry it downstairs. My wife and I can't handle that kind of weight any longer.
So, FedEx delivers it. Blocky, like refrigerator blocky, Mexican guy with about the coolest pompadour ever. Weight lifter. I ask him if he can bring it up the steps so I can un-cart on the porch. So he goes to the truck and carries it instead of using the hand truck. Ah, strong like I used to be. "Where's it going? How about I put it down there?" Carried it downstairs and set it down like a baby. Strong, kind, and a great guy. Argued for several minutes for him to take the $$ I proferred.

We're lucky around here. Makes me feel bad for everyone that gets crappo delivery service.
 
I think t has been three years since this thread was last posted on ;):cool: My comments then were on a specific incident.
However, I think our UPS folks today are great. They know that heavy packages are going to my SUV most likely and drive them around to the back of the store. They usually offer to help load a heavy box in my vehicle. When delivering a large number of large and heavy boxes of store supplies (receipts, boxes, bags, etc.), they will drive over to our storage unit a block away and drop them there.

Can't agree with this more. Get to know your folks and be their friends.. We make things for em for Christmas etc. Down at the barn the other day and the Fed Ex gal came down and just looked at a new foal for a few and then picked up the packages we were shipping. Same with our UPS guy. I'm his "amigo", "Oh amigo more work for you to do" as he hands me an armload of supplies. Both of these folks and the folks before them and the ones before that, will bend over backwards to help us out. Friendliness goes along ways.

Shipping a lot of packages all over the country (and the world really), we'll have folks tell us use Fed Ex not UPS and other guys will say use UPS and not Fed Ex. It really does seem to come down to the individual delivery person. Recently sent a saddle to a customer way out in the middle of the eastern desert of Oregon. While we normally ship Fed Ex he asked specifically for UPS. Why? Fed Ex will leave it alongside the roadway. UPS will bring it the two miles up the drive to the house and leave it on the porch. Ya want your $4500 used saddle sitting alongside the roadway or you want it on the porch?

Sounds like a human error problem, I had a similar issue with a
FedEx delivery not too long ago and it doesn't appear to be an inherent issue with the company.
