Pronunciation?

So I'm folding and I'm going to ask for the answer to the question I've always been embarrassed to ask. What is the proper pronunciation for the words "choil" and "detent"?

I always want to say it like coil, but I feel that it is pronounced just how it is spelled with the CH like choke.

I always pronounce the word detent like day-taunt, but I've heard it pronounced as de-tent just like it's spelled.

So I've typed these words enough, but am I saying them right?

You're pronouncing choil right, with the "ch" like in the word choke, but detent is pronounced dee-tent, not "day-taunt," unless of course you're trying to sound fancy about it, which is fine too.:D

That's generally how I pronounce them.

Of course like 3guardsmen said, you might want to sound all fancy-like with yer grawnd piawno-this and your tomawtoe-that, which is fine, too. ;)
 
I've heard people say choil as 'coil' but I don't know if that is correct.

I know for a fact that detent is correctly pronounced as dee-tent. 'Day-taunt' is a result of diplomacy while a 'dee-tent' (or deh-tent) is a stop or index point in a mechanical device.
 
You know while we are in this forum does anyone know how to pronounce Busse properly? Some people say it's BEU-SEE others say it's BUS-EE like school bus. And a few others pronounce it BOO-SEE.

How do you pronounce it the right way?

I've wondered that for a while myself :confused:

I usually say "Buss-ee", as in "You no good Hussy, you"
 
I've tried saying Busse as "boo-see" but it always ends up sounding like a certain body part...

The Man pronounces it BUSS-ee. Guess that's good enough for me.

This kind of stuff cracks me up. All the Emerson wannabes call him Ernie. I can assure you that nobody who actually knows the man will ever call him anything but Ernest.

But I guess we need a way to separate the men from the chumps.
 
I've never really had Busse on my radar so I've never really wondered, but I am definitely odd man out. I always thought it was pronounced like that last part of abuse. Just the buse part.

Ya learn new things everyday.

Who else doesn't know how to pronounce something correctly? Since they were released I always wondered about Umnumzaan.
 
This reminds me of a funny (true) story.

Way back when (in the '70s) we all used to call Leupold scopes "Loo-pold." And then I actually met his widow (he was long dead even then) who had a conniption fit and insisted that the name was pronounced "Lee-up-hold."

So I figured hey, she ought to know, right, and started pronouncing it "Lee-up-hold."

Well, she's long dead now also, and guess how Leupold itself pronounces the name now? You got it - "Loo-pold."

Go figure.

How funny, I always thought it was Loo-pold too. I guess I'll be pronouncing it Lee-up-hold now, as the original owner would have wanted it.

Anymore pronunciations we need to clear up?
