Lowe's says it will refill a 20lb. propane tank for $15. Good price or not?

How much better is a 100lb. tank? How much more $$$?

Where else can I get a refill?

Thanks!

Daniel
my 100 lbs cost almost 50.00 to fill go to a local propane outlet

That is high for a 20 pounder. I have a 40 pounder that I run and it costs me about $17 to get it filled at a local place. Most tank exchange progams cost alot more.

Look in your phone book for LP Gas, and you should be able to find something cheaper.

Uhall charges $14.00 for a 20 pounder. My farmer buddy fills my 100 pounder for $30.00 and my twenty for $6.00. Know any farmers?

Daniel, this is what I did. I contacted the local gas company, they gave me #100 bottle for $20 to lease, lease for as long as I want the bottle. Then when I give it back I get the $20 back, win win situation. They come to the house and deliver a full bottle when ever I need it, they just take the empty and leave a full one. Cost is $50 and I don't have to do anything but call them. It would be cheaper if I could buy a 100 or 250 gallon tank and buy by the gallon, but there hard to find at a reasonable price. Call your local gas company and see if they'll do the same.

Most the gas stations around here also handle propane. Some give somewhat of a break if you go over a certain amount. The station I use charges $1.75 a gallon. Most are $2.00 to $2.25 a gallon.

100 lb refill should be around $50, or $0.50 per lb.

20 lb refill (at same price) would be $10

40 lb refill - $20

Bill - I'll give the gas company a call......thanks for the tip.

Just in case you dont have a decent gas Co. like Mr Buxton with free or cheep lease tanks, lowes also sells 100lb bottles for 80 bucks(empty of course).

Seems like the most recent refill on my 100 pounder was a little over $50.

Dan, as far if the 100 pounder is better, I guess it's relative to your usage. Back when this was all just for fun the 20 pounders were fine. I kept three of them.

As you get more serious and are doing more forging, the 20 pounders start to become an annoyance. Long before the tank is actually empty, the efficiency starts dropping off, the outside of the tanks start frosting over, the forge starts spitting and sputtering, etc. The 100 pounder is like the Energizer Bunny. It just keeps going, and going, and going ...

As a full-timer the 100 pounder is a necessity for me. I do still have the three 20 pounders that I can use for emergencies. For example if I fire up the forge on a Sunday and run out of propane, I'll hook up one of the 20's to get me through the day. Then come Monday morning I haul the 100 pounder in for a refill. I love the thing. It's well worth it to me.

Gib, Did it take a jump after the Iraq thing got going? I was paying 1.50 a gal but it took a 25c a gallon jump for me.

Found a place that will refill a 20lb for $10 and a 40lb for $15

They charge $75 for a 40lb tank, though.....:(

At that price, I'll just spend the extra $5 and buy a 80lb tank at Lowes.

Their charge to fill a 100lb tank is $40.

Thanks for the help, guys.

Make shure you call around! I called the local U-haul and asked them how much their propane was and he quoted me $3.38 a Gal. the next place was $1.45 a Gal./ $35 for a 100# cyl.
