It seems like BDU's from 35/65 or 40/60 cotton/nylon mix make great outdoors pants (no kidding) but have any of you bought stuff made by Propper company?

At less than half the price of brand name trekking pants I think they are worth a look at.

I bought some black Propper pants at a surplus store (they were new). I also bought some knock off black pants from a show exhibitor.

The Proppers are grey/charcoal after fewer than 10 washings, while the knock offs are still almost the original deep black.

I will shop for other brands.

I have some 100% cotton(I live in the desert) rip stop Proppers that I like. In fact I searched out a place on line and bought more pairs for $9.00 each.

They are tan so I haven't had any problems with fading.

Thanks guys, I dont really care about the fading as I will only be using them for hiking/bushcraft stuff. My main concern is how good is the stitching and toughness in general?

Ok, I do collect uniforms and BDU. I can tell you, Propper do make VERY GOOD uniforms. Regarding thatmguy's pants, I think he bought the type that will fade. I remember reading in the Catalogue's of Propper that one type of material that they sell will fade in colour. I think thatmguy bought just those type. You guys can go to www.propper.com to take a look at their uniform. I would like to buy their pants but have no idea where I can get them at cheap prices. I live outside of the US so it's quite hard for me to get my hands on Propper's BDU.

For the material type, you can go to their website and download their catalouge. At page 13 of the catalouge, they have a section under fabric chart which will tell you the types of material they use to manufacture their products. They will also tell you which of their products will fade in colour when washed a few times.

The Materials are namely Battlerip (65% Poly/ 35% Cotton Ripstop), Nyco Ripstop (50% Nylon/ 50% Cotton Ripstop), Twill (60% Cotton/ 40% Poly Twill) and Cotton Ripstop (100% Cotton Ripstop).

BTW, runwithscissors, what website did you buy your's from? Care to share?

Okay, I must be losing it, but for the life of me I can't find a downloadable catalog on their website. Where do you find it? I can only see individual categories with very brief description.

Ok, you need to go to Home page of the website. It is on the Right hand side and it's one small pic that says " Download the current Propper Catalouge in PDF Format" You will need to click on that.

Do tell me if you guys want to buy. I am keen on buying one of the BDUs from this brand

I bought them at BDU.com but either I totally misremembered the price I paid or they raised the price of their pants. The price now is close to what I can buy them locally for.

I have found the pants to be very rugged. As I said I live in the desert and haven't had any problems with rips or tears while climbing over sharp rocks or brushing against cactus. The only cut I have in the pants is one I got when wiping my knife against my knee. But since the knee is a double layer of cloth the cut didn't go all the way through.

Thanks. I was looking for a link in one of the menus. The pictures on the right side looked at a first glance like third-party ads, so I did not examine them carefully.

I have worn Propper BDU pants for several years for work and am overall very pleased with them.

The 100% cotton is cool and comfortable, but fades somewhat quickly and and have blow the knees and crotch out of a couple pair. The khaki doesn't fade that bad, but the navy and black will show their age.

The Poly/Cotten blend are another story. They keep their colors well and I have yet to tear a pair up. I rotated through three pairs and wore them hard every day for about 6 weeks after Hurricane Katrina hit and they all look virtually brand new. I plan on buying several new pairs of the khaki for wear around the office next month when they issue us our new shirts.

Great info guys, just what i am looking for.

One last question, how fast do they dry out if wet from a down pour or if you are a sweat beast?

It really depends on how you dry it. Do follow the instructions on the pants for extended life of the pants.

I would like to buy 2 pairs of Propper BDU, but am not sure where I can get them. On the internet, many of the sites do not ship to my country, Singapore. Any idea where can I get them? Am really keen to get them.

I currently have BDUs from Tru-Spec. They are another great company that make BDUs.

Which poly/cotton mix are you buying? The Battlerip (65% Poly/ 35% Cotton Ripstop) or the Twill (60% Cotton/ 40% Poly Twill)?

Would Nyco Ripstop (50% Nylon/ 50% Cotton Ripstop) feel more "plasticky"? I don't have any local store that would have them, so I have no ways of assessing relative merits of those blends, and I definitely want to buy a pair or two very soon (will wear them in high, rocky terrain with some precipitation expected almost every day, temperatures from high 40s to mid 70s (F)).

Anybody who used Propper BDUs who could compare the different poly/cotton blends and the nyco blend (see post immediately above)?
