I searched here and did some light YouTube research to see if others are having this issue and didn’t see anything.

Touched and fell in love with another protech. Got a new in box mordax that was not the display.

Fidgeting with it and noticed that the blade will not flip open manually. I have to press the button lock. That was not how the display behaved.

I’ve heard of button lock and break in for blades that are already deployed but not closed.

Thoughts?

Pictures because everyone likes pictures.

That doesn't sound normal - I've owned several Pro-Tech flippers and they don't do that. I would contact Pro-Tech. They have a reputation for great customer service.

My two Malibus have been flawless, but I have a Vosteed Valkyrie that developed a problem like that. Out of the box, the action was great. But after the return period expired, if I opened it with the thumbstud, then the next time I tried to open it with either the thumbstud or the flipper, it absolutely would not open unless I pressed the button. I put it in a drawer and forgot about it for a couple months. Then I tried it again, and it was back to normal and has been ever since. I have no idea what happened.

The knife gremlins were messing with you. When you put the knife away, they got bored and went to mess with someone else. ;)

Quick update. Who exchanges emails with me at 1:30am cst? Protech customer service does. Amazing.

“sometimes when our knives sit for a bit, the oil can migrate out of the detent area. This can make the detent stick, as it needs to be able to slide on the button to work. Thankfully, this is extremely easy to fix. You just need to oil the button, and it will begin working again. To do this, first open the knife. This will expose the button if you look through the spine of the knife. Next, take any quality knife or gun oil, and simply apply ONE drop to the button. You’ll want to put it on the right side, which is the part that moves in and out of the back handle half. Only use one drop, as you don’t want to over do it on the oil and have it move around to other parts of the knife. Once you’ve applied a drop to the button, simply open and close the knife manually 10-15 times. This will move the oil from the button to the detent section. Once you’ve done this, the knife should begin to open normally. After a handful of flips, it will begin to smooth out and operate perfectly.”

Not saying I know everything but I’ll add to the instructions that I used rem oil. I also started out working the oil lightly about 40 times with no success. Only when I was aggressively flipping this during a zoom call did it magically work. After 10 times…. It worked.

Now I can’t stop flipping this. Thanks everyone and yes you were right…protech customer service is great.
