Got one of these the other day, Protech Mordax in Magnacut MX101.

Not the Drop version but it is Ferrum Forge design.

Beautiful knife, great size, desirable steel, button lock, made in USA, etc.

Problem is when the knife is closed it has considerable 'slop' in what would be the detent. You shake the knife and it clicks and clacks which is something my Malibu's have never ever done. Have gone back and forth with a couple of emails with Protech and they say its normal and part of the 'tuned detent design'.

Have any of you experienced anything like this?

The Mordax I owned had a lighter detent than my Malibu for sure, and much less satisfying action. When you say slop, is it just like a Benchmade Axis lock where you can get the blade to move a bit (or a lot) when closed because the spring "detent" is relatively light?

Its like there is no detent for 1/16" or so, then you can feel it. I can tip the knife upside down and the blade drops that 1/16".

The button seems to not even engage into the blade for a little, then it does and feels normal. Its just the slop between fully closed and that point that kinda sucks TBH.

That's definitely not how mine was, and a far cry from Pto-Tech's usual perfection. IMO that's a return/warranty issue.

I was hoping you would demonstrate where "You shake the knife and it clicks and clacks" in the video.

What you are showing in the video is what Dadpool Dadpool asked about in his post above, regarding a similarity to the Benchmade Axis lock.

The button lock and it's compressed spring are the detent. The Malibu is a smaller knife, with less blade mass than the Mordax.

It's possible Pro-Tech uses the same weight of spring in the Mordax that they use in the Malibu. I don't know, I've only ever owned/handled a Malibu.

Regardless, for the money these knives are going for, it shouldn't click or clack when you shake the knife.

EDIT: I just read your answer to Dadpool's question. I would absolutely send it back to Pro-Tech.

That's what I was thinking but trying to avoid.

Trying to figure out why Protech is telling me its fine?

Gonna send a note to the retailer and see what they say.

I picked the same knife up last weekend and mine is just like my Malibu. It’s locked down tight and does not move when closed.

The Malibu I have does have a slightly looser feel when flipping than the Mordax so maybe it’s just some variation in the quality control at Pro tech.

Buddy of mine has one of the textures Malibu’s and it seems to be the most satisfying flipper of the 3. Nothing I can put my finger on but if you fidget with each, it’s the most satisfying. His has seen the most use so I was hoping mine would get better over time.

Couldn't really see anything when I gave it a shake, so i turned it upside down and closed the blade then let it fall. Subpar video but if you turn the volume up you can hear it.

It's way worse in person.

I agree 100% about the Malibu, thought the Mordax would be similar.

I agree with what B BSheppard said above, about it being a QC issue at Pro-Tech.

Unfortunately, it's probably within whatever tolerance range Pro-Tech deems "acceptable".

Why else would you have some that are great, and some that aren't?

I would return it for an exchange, or a refund.

I know they're difficult to get, but the play yours exhibits is not acceptable, at least, not to me it isn't.

It doesn't hurt the knife's funtionality, thus not a problem. If you haven't used it get a refund, but it's not really a defect, SOL.

Well, I sent the knife back, the retailer was super helpful and responsive.

While it might not effect the functionality, it still doesn't seem right. I'm pretty new to this level of knives, but I have never seen this before and was a bit curious if anyone else, that has been in the game longer, has experienced this.

The Mordax are pretty hard to get and I thought about selling it, but not in this condition. With that being said, I don't want a $300 knife in this condition.

I asked the retailer to look at it and let me know what they think.

I'll let you guys know what they say.

BTW - I will still buy and use Protech 🤟

That's good to hear.

I returned the first Pro-Tech I ever bought, years ago, due to fit and finish issues.
When I picked up a Malibu, to revisit the brand, I was impressed by how much improved the quality was.
I would still buy and use a Pro-Tech as well.

Love everything about my except for one thing. What is up with this choil BS? I've seen it destroy a couple other great knife designs. First of all who needs to choke up on a 3.5 inch knife? Second of all whose little girly fingers do they make these for? If I actually tried to use it as intended it would shred the F out of me. Third, I needed to cut some lengths of and 550 cord the loop kept snagging in that stupid effing choil. Get rid of it! Just a nice little sharpening soil is all you need.
