Just saw this knife mentioned in the List Your Knives thread and assumed it was a typo. Lo and behold after a quick Google search it actually exists. It is Protech's first spring assisted knife and is modeled after the TR-4. Seeing pictures of the TR-4 is what got me looking at autos and Protech specifically but I never picked one up as I have (for the most part) moved away from larger folders. To my pleasant surprise, the TR-5 is a scaled down version and looks to be right in the sweet spot.

Has anyone out there picked one up yet? How is the spring assist? Can the spring easily be taken out to make a manual? If so, for the better or worse?

Here are the specs taken from Protech's site.

Love this knife. The blade shape. The spring rockets the blade out. Jumped on the pre-production run as soon as it came out. I spoke with the owner of Protech at a local show and I really liked what he had to say. The deep carry clip works perfect. I also really enjoy the aluminum scales.

I am just waiting for them to be available(want an all black one) thru bladehq. If they are like my protech autos it will be fantastic.

Protech has me good right now. I only have the TR4 model, but liked it so much I ordered a backup. Now I'm looking next at the Godson or Godfather.

Not having the TR5 to compare I'll say a few things, Protech is a small US company, and I've spoken with the owner a few times which to me spending that much time with a customer says something special about a company. They excel at grinds, lockup, and centering. I wish I had looked at the company much earlier than I did. I love how they make many versions of the same knife to add to the choices you have. I don't think you can go wrong with any of their models.

Protech's building is close to where I live and his dad owns Ross Cutlery in LA which is a great shop. Both of them are awesome guys. If you're ever in LA I'm sure Ross has the TR-5 in stock.

Great pics AusLox! They're tipping the scale from wants towards needs.

You as well Riverwarrior!

Been to their facility in So Cal and met the owner, Dave.
Great guy and company!
My EDC knife. Love it!

Is the black thumb stud strictly on the pre-production models? The few dealers who have this available only show it with a plain steel stud.

The one I received yesterday from a retailer has the steel stud

TR-5 is my next Pro Tech! Every member here who has one loves it!
That's good enough for me.

Hey Otto!! Spoke to my many LE friends and what I was told was as long as you aren't doing something VERY stupid you'll be fine.
If you are caught with one while committing a crime you will be in deep shit, otherwise you'll be fine.
I carry one every day.

That's good to hear, Joe! Appreciate the inside info from LE. I wouldn't want to have one taken from me just for carrying. Wasn't sure how police in our state viewed autos on upstanding citizens.

if you want a black thumb stud they will send it no charge to swap out the plain steel one.Changed my mind and got the one the guys above have but asked them to send me a black stud and they said no problem.
