Alright BF - PROVE ME WRONG!!!

So you can pick up a GiantMouse Ace Iona here on the forum for $90 in Like New condition and $120 in New Condition. My challenge is this, what else can you buy that competes with the Iona for $90 or $120 considering all you’re getting with the Iona?

2 rules , your suggestion MUST include any “super steel” comparable to M390 and it must ride on PB washers or something comparable. Or, skip the rules and make your case.

Quick breakdown of the Iona and my argument.

1. M390
2. Phosphor Bronze washers
(Just with these first 2 points, I’m not sure how many other knives are out there for $90 in like new condition or $120 in New condition.)
3. As sharp as any Spyderco right out of the box
4. Outstanding action and detent
5. I really like the shape of the handle but I can see how this might be a love it or hate it design.
6. Very lightweight and comes from the factory with deep carry wire clip installed, (((get your crap together Spyderco (I spend $200 and then have to go buy a $25 deep carry pocket clip!!!???)))
7. Textured G-10 , great grip overall

Flaw- the liner lock is hard to access so I used my dremel and removed some G-10 , no longer an issue.

Specs for your consideration

  • Blade Length:2.875"
  • Cutting Edge:2.75"
  • Blade Width:0.88"

I’d have to research more for specific models but I think Kizer and Civivi offer knives as good. MKM makes several knives I’d say are as good. Btw washers as pivot are cheaper then ball bearings if I recall and many knives have those. Also G10 isn’t an expensive handle material so that’s not exactly hard to beat. Not saying the Iona isnt a great bang for buck btw

Ignoring Chinese knives: if ball bearings are “comparable”, there are several competitive Kershaws in CPM 154 and Cold Steels in S35vn.
I can’t think of a cold steel that has action like this Iona with the detent and washers. I love Cold Steel but it’s apples and oranges I believe. What Kershaw would you put up against the Iona.

Congratulations on your grail. I personally don't care for anything made by GM so any of my ZTs, Benchmades or Spydercos in any steel are preferable to me. Super Steel is also a bit overrated, anything in the "good" category with decent HT will serve the average user or even the average knife nut just as well or better, as it will be easier to sharpen. I have some super steel knives and a few in D2 with high hrc, they are a pain in the ass to sharpen.

I do have a $20 EF branded knife in "D2" or 9cr something. its on bearings and the steel is incredibly hard, I've seen the same knife under 4 or 5 brands. I backed off the edge with diamond stones on the lansky and finished it off on the sharp maker and croc sticks. So far I have not had to re-sharpen it and its been used off and on for a year.

Yeah, great knife but it doesn’t have anywhere close to the action the Iona has. Delica has no detent and is more of a slow manual open type. Great knife though, I have 2:)
Bluntly, you're playing a game in which you've set arbitrary standards, asked for something and are now proceeding to tell everyone that, in good faith, answers your question how they're wrong. It's self-gratifying silliness. I'm glad you found a knife you enjoy. There are dozens in the price range that compete with it very effectively in terms of materials and quality. In the future I recommend just telling everyone you really like the knife instead of indulging in this kind of ridiculousness.

Oooohhh, snarky on a Sunday morning. I like it. Not my grail knife, interesting take. Trying reading OP again or even 3 times and make an argument. I love ZT, my 620 and 630 are 2 of my favorites in my collection, love my 940-1, love my Para 3 cruwear. All of these are significantly more expensive than the Iona. Not the point of the post. Try again and bring the real SNARK this time!!!

Fox, Kizer, Lionsteel, Maxace, MKM, Steel Will and Twosun have M390 models in that price range.

The best knife deal in recent years was the Manix G-10 Rex 45 sprint, which dropped at $126 in 2020.

The Kershaw Link in 20cv. It is Made in the USA, has phospor bronze washers, and can currently be had for $75 new.
Almost, don’t think the speed safe assisted open is comparable and will fail eventually and then the knife is useless. I had an old school SOG with assisted opening that I paid about $100 for and after 6 months the assisted open failed and now it’s useless. Washers can always be cleaned and oiled.

Ad10! Boom 😎 Thank me later
Dude, AD-10 is on my absolute favorite list and I have 3!!! There is absolutely zero comparison between the AD-10 and the Iona. Completely different in almost every category including price. Once again, it’s literally the knife that surprised me the most in the past several years but it’s an apples to spaceships comparison, lol.

well, that’s one way to avoid making a counter, attack the person. Holy shit fellas, it’s a blade forum and I was just looking for competitors to a specific knife in a certain price range. I’m not arguing pro-life vs pro-choice here. Everyone relax, take a deep breath in and remember, we are just discussing knives because we are almost all knife nuts!!! Have some fun, not everything has to be so serious and nasty. GEEZ.

By the way, my post equals my rules!!!! Don’t participate if you don’t like the game.

No, you're not looking for anything other than an opportunity to condescendingly explain to whomever answers your question about how they're wrong. That's all you've done the entire time. And unless you're a mod, this is very far from 'your post your rules' this is a discussion forum and folks are free to respond as they please.

False on many fronts and where have I been condescending? I’ve actually complimented people on their suggestions and simply pointed out my opinion that it might not be an apples to apples comparison. And yes, my post equals my rules. I wanted have fun and and ask for good suggestions that would compare to the Iona at about $90. There’s always someone in the room to make everything negative and nasty, congrats, you’re that guy. Go back and actually read my responses, they are fair and reasonable. I’m looking into one guys posts about MKM, Kizer, and Fox right now to see where they stack up before I respond.

You're a noob that thinks they've discovered the holy grail because you bought a knife you like. You're not a mod, so you don't get to make the rules for any post here, I'm not either, so neither do I, but I'm free to respond in any way that doesn't violate forum rules.

I stand entirely by my statement that this thread is nothing more than you attempting to pat yourself on the back so hard that you dislocate your shoulder, but in the interest of not derailing it any further I'll simply say this, The CIVIVI Appalachian Drifter 2 uses comparable to superior materials, has better action and is less expensive. Next time just tell everyone you like the knife a lot and we'll all celebrate with you.
