I recently saw a circular stone for axes and hatchets called, I believe, a "puck". Does anyone have any experience with this sharpening device? I have a Mini GB and want to keep a nice edge.

Regards,
JB

I have one, and use it to keep my axe/hatchet heads sharp. They are coarse on one side, and fine grit on the other, and work quite well in my opinion. Mine has dished out a little from many years of use, but I don't see that as a problem, as the dish fits the convex profile of my heads.
Of coarse if your head is pretty dull a file would be a better choice to get it to the point the stone should take over. Once sharp though, the "puck" will keep it that way!

I sometimes use one on a 25+ year old Sears axe I bought while in school. I would be reluctant to use the coarse side on a GB Mini unless it has taken some damage. Even with the fine side, I'd be gentle. I try to maintain my Mini in sharp enough condition that a strop and polishing compound are sufficient to touch up the edge. I believe that GB "strops" them at the factory with a buffing wheel and compound to produce the excellent edge they come with.

Thanks all.

The GB has such a nice edge I didn't want to use too coarse of a sharpening device. I just wasn't familiar with the puck. The little Mini GB is a handy tool for squirrel hunters.

Those sharpeners are for utility axes that are used for sod and bone cutting. For a wood working axe you want a much finer abrasive. I use a couple of small waterstones in 1000 and 4000 grit and then strop to finish.
