While perusing the CS website, I came across
their push knives. I am curious if a push
knife is useful in a survival or self-defense
situation. Obviously having a knife is always better than not. How useful is this style as opposed to a straight handled design?

Hi HL....

In a survival situation,, it would pretty much be next to useless...
For self defence it is a little better...

Push daggers are really last ditch,CQC weapons. Not much good for anything else...

If you are thinking about a knife purchase,, a small utilitary knife is a far better choice...

However if you really like the Dagger,,by all means..
Just check your local laws first..Some places they are highly illegal...

I have a CS mini pal, and I just use it for anything and everything when a non knife person is around, and it makes a good keychain fob. But combat use of it, I don't think it will make much of a difference.

Push daggers were real popular personal defense weapons during California gold rush days. Gamblers liked to carry them for concealed carry close-in defense. They are very secure in the hand so you aren't likely to drop them. They are very powerful thrusting. I would rate them #1 for their blade lengths (short) for self defense. They are awkward for utility tasks.

The Cold Steel Desperado takes a kind of "best of both worlds" approach. A full size, nogales clip blade, with a push-style handle.

Very workable, and very concealable.

Push daggers are illegal in a lot of places
check local laws before carrying one.

I'm waiting for Outdoor Edge to release their Appleton "Cosmos" not only can you use it as a Push knife, but as a regular knife, and it just happens to be a beautiful work of Art, that I doubt would upset even the most fearful sheeple.

What about the real long push dagger CS offers? It looks like there's too much blade/handle ratio to be really useful. What do you guys think

Push knives are good for several reasons, but strictly in a self defense role.

They are almost impossible to disarm - good for you, because you don't want mr. bad guy picking it up.

If you use a punching style, you can get incredible penetration, i would say almost as much as an icepick grip stab.

They are very intimidating....don't know why, they just are.

They are small (generally) and therefore easy to conceal, but as stated, check your local laws. I know they're illegal here.

All knives are created equal, then i get my dirty big hands on them and the real fun begins.

I put a Belgian sword pistol grip on an Aransas toothpick at one time. It is a bulky design, but allows incredibly strong thrusting, parrying, and snap cuts.

I think... I think that knife is on my "to buy" list now. But seriously, it looks good. Much better than that other one that was offered, (maybe by CAS Iberia) with the damscus inserts on the sides. The blade on that one looked tiny.

Chris Hatin hatintec@dellnet.com is making up a push knife for me in 440C that should arrive in a few weeks or so. IIRC, he said he would be doing a small run of this pattern. You might want to drop him a line & see if they are all spoken for yet.

Chris has a scan of an unfinished blank that can give you a better idea of what this will look like but the basic elements are: blade - 2.25" long at the grind lines; 3" wide handle; and, OAL of 4". Blade grind & finish, handle material, sheath construction & style, etc. can be tailored according to the buyer's wishes. Mine will be chisel ground, satin finished, bolt-on ivory micarta scales, unsharpened scalloped swedge, and lined Concealex neck/IWB sheath.

One thing to think about before getting one with a long blade is that the longer blade gives more leverage against your hand. If you were to thrust it at someone and they managed to knock the blade down or to the side, a longer blade would twist against your hand harder, and it would be an easier target for someone to deflect than a short blade.

IMO the two things about push daggers that make them viable are that 1)It is difficult for someone to disarm you. 2)If you are skilled with a grappling art like Aikido, Judo, or Jiujitsu, you are able to take advantage of opportunities on the fly, in other words, you can still use your hands to grasp without having to put away your weapon first. Otherwise they are of less value than conventional knives for most tasks.
