Putting Drill Chuck on motor shaft

How can I fit a drill chuck on a motor shaft?

I have a spare shaft on a craftsman disc grinder, the other end used to power a belt grinder but that got a new motor as detailed elsewhere. The shaft is 1/2 with a flat section.

I could fit a motor shaft adapter with a threaded shaft, but hopefully I will be fitting a reversing switch to the motor and so am worried the drill chuck could loosen when rotation is reversed.

If I turned a shaft adapter so it had a taper maybe that would work? I do not really understand how a drill chuck stays on a tapered shaft though. :o

Drill chucks stay on a taper because drilling only produces pressure on the axis of the taper, they are not designed for side loads. You'll need a threaded chuck if you want to apply side loads, or you will find out the damage a fast spinning metal chuck can do when it takes off. Mind you the chucks themselves don't like side loads much either.

Your best bet is to post up WHY you would need to hold different sized shafting in a chuck and someone can find a suitable solution.
