I'm looking for a medium ALICE pack and came across some different designations, anyone know what LC1, LC2, LC3 mean?

A sternum strap helps as well - and if you put any significant weight in it be sure to use the waist strap - your back will thank you.

I modded my straps to accept a quick-release buckle and I've seen some people put the cargo shelf on and leave it there (can still use the pack, but now you can carry 5-gal fuel/water cans or whatever on it readily.

IMHO - forget the military waterproof bags - you can get lighter and easier-to-use waterproof bags from seal or outdoor research.

A handful of ALICE clips weigh a pound... you may want to opt for the much lighter "Malice" clips or even MOLLE locks for stuff... I used to use zip ties, but found that they get brittle with too much exposure to the elements (hot/cold cycles, UV exposure, etc.).

I have 2 ALICE packs - 1 medium and 1 large... the large ends up getting used all the time, the medium just sits there... Either way, you may want to consider a separate bag for your sleeping bag and secure it to the outside - the interior space is a precious commodity.

DH1,
I curious what is guiding you to an ALICE gear anything? I know they are rather robust and easily repaired, but there are so many set ups that are so much better at hauling gear.

I've got a great Eagle pack for my primary hauling (along with a Large ALICE if I need more room). I was considering a medium ALICE because they are pretty cheap and I was looking for a quality (but not $100+ quality) pack to use for my truck kit.

Thanks for the link and info guys..looks like the LC3 was the final incarnation of the ALICE pack..

Agreed - ALICE is old school, but it's what many are most familiar with, and it's easy to modify the frame to haul around other stuff if need be, versus an internal frame pack.

They are also relatively cheap to buy surplus as well as field repair.

One of my favorite mods from the army days is how we would detach the straps and run them around the brush guard and window frames of the rear doors on the Humvees - this allowed us to carry a lot more gear internally.

"and run them around the brush guard and window frames of the rear doors on the Humvees"
At least you had humvees! My wife thinks I'm at least an inch shorter (in height) than before I was in the Army from carrying the ruck and jumping.
DH1, I hear you on the medium alice for the truck. I still have a large alice as well, although it rarely gets used. I did use it to store and haul extra gear in my patrol car during my tactical days. It's been rigged with shouder straps from Tactical Tailor and the waist belt from a more current molle ruck.
