Hello Everybody,

I have been seeing for some months a lot of knives bearing the mark "Rough Ryder Reserve". They are more expensive than the normal Rough Ryder knives, look like original traditional american knives and are claimed to be of a far superior quality that the common Rough reserve ones...

What is your opinion upon these knives ? GEC knives are almost impossible to get...Would these RRR knives make a correct alternative choice for GEC ones or are they of the normal so-so quality of the usual RR knives ?

Very thank you for your opinions.

Have a nice day.

Henry

I have learnt a lot from this thread I still haven't bought one though.

So I just received my first RRR and here is my opinion just based on this one and only knife. The knife itself is better built than a modern case. Not a question. The action is damn good IMO. Some design features are very questionable and can be rather polarizing. My issue with the RRR is the fact they use washers on the pivot. This causes the blade to have play from liner to liner when in the closed position. Also there is a gap at the tang between both liners which looks off to me. However when opened it’s has very minimal play. And only feel it if I really give it force. As far as compared to GEC well IMO it’s not a fair comparison. GEC is still heads and shoulders above RRR. The shields appear to be glued. The finish on the metals isn’t as nice and actual micarta isn’t as high quality as GEC micarta. All that being said for $39 it’s a buy. I’m not sure if I’d pay more than maybe $60 if it was a really nice pattern though.

Very thank you for the info. It is very interesting, but all that was said doesn't push me to buy one yet...I could pass on the "very good but not excellent finish" and also on the somewhat curious features, but the play in the blades that is often referred to do frighten me more than a little...

I think I will wait a little more before purchasing one...

I don't have a RRR. They're a bit out of my budget. I do like the looks of the "kayak" and sunfish ("Rhino"?) though. I might save up and get them next year, if still available. If not ... oh well. I really don't "need" them. :)

I agree. I detest wiggly wobbly blades when opened. That is a deal murderer for me, same as needing a steel fingernail or pliers to open a blade.
That said, a little blade wiggle when closed, while still annoying as all git-out is a little easier to live with than one that wiggles in use, as long as it doesn't collide with a liner or neighboring blade.

Here's a thread on the RRR knives.

My post is the last one in that thread. I am impressed with the quality of the knife. I bought two at once, one for my dads birthday and one for me.

Both examples were perfect. Im confident they are all that good

Thanks for the explanation about the washers and the loose blades when closed, I was wondering why.
