Hey guys. I have been using a Husky torx driver to take my knives apart, but the drivers are some kind of crap metal that deform and then break. I would say that I apply moderate pressure to them at most. I just broke the T6 on my second driver, so maybe its time to try something else. At $6 a set, though, I could just keep buying new Husky drivers sets (like this one) from time to time, as they break.

Are there any tool steel or quality torx bits or driver sets out there? I really just need T6 and T9 probably - either the individual bits, or preferably a small driver with bits. Something with some decent steel. Thanks.

I am probably spelling it wrong but my wife got me a set of weiha? They are nice. Russ

Wiha are nice, but expensive. Almost as good are the Do It Best brand drivers. I have a set and they are great! I use them regularly and they hold up well. My dad has a set of the wiha, which are nice but not better enough to warrant the cost difference.

I've got a couple of the tiny Husky sets, and they're a pretty good deal for the money, but my go to has been my Bondhus Gorilla Grip fold out torx set. $8-$10 online, and I've yet to see any deformation. I've broken through some seriously overly applied loctite as well. The Wiha are nice if you have the change for them, or if you use torx constantly. I actually just ordered a Titan fold out security torx set so I can silence my microwave. I'm hoping it's a nice surprise like the GorillaGrip was.

Honestly just invest in a few of the Wiha's and then you will never have to worry about buying another set for the rest of your life.

I agree with the others. Buy a Wiha set and you won't have to buy another set. More importantly, you'll reduce the chances of damaging your screws.

Thanks guys. Much appreciated. [Now I have the broken tip of a T6 stuck down in a Cold Steel screw :)].

Get a set of WIHA drivers with hardened tips...you wont regret it, and you wont need to buy more in a few months;-)

That's a very cool little tool right there I hadn't seen that one before. I think I will have to pick one of those up I like how compact it is. Thanks for the link.

no problem.

it's nice and compact and quite solid.

wiha does it right.

I've used Wiha for years and they are rock solid. Very precise tolerances and the tools are hardened and durable. A little more expensive, but they won't break the bank...

I got some Snap On. Weiha is very reputable. Whatever you get, get some quality stuff. It is SO much nicer, when you are working on your stuff, and not rounding off heads. That just pisses me off.

Quick comment on breaking small Torx dirver bits. Many knives have a thread locking compound when factory assembled.

I use a small tip soldering iron to heat up the screw head which softens the thread lock prior to removing, especially the very small sizes.

Very good tip. I do this with gun parts as well.

I used the kobalt torx set for years, I assume it was the same as the husky set the OP speaks about, all the bits would store in the handle, and they would work great for a little while, but they would break or get deformed very easily, Luckily they have a lifetime warranty, as I exchanged them probably 5 times. After I broke my last set of kobalt torx drivers ,I went and bought all craftsman torx drivers and so far I like them, the craftsman sizes seem to be off though, for example some knives are known to take a t-7 driver, but with the craftsman ones I have a t-7 is too big for the screw and you haft to use a t-6. other thsn that though I have really cranked down on the craftsmans and so far(knock on wood), I haven't had one break or deform on me yet. Luckily if they do lifetime warranty. I spent about 23 dollars I believe and got t-5 through t-10 I believe, I'll haft to check my toolbox to see what the smallest one is but I believe it is a t-5.
