I have a heat treat oven on order. I want to start out with oil that will get me the best results but I would like to use just one type of oil. From what I have read here Parks # 50 and AAA are often used. Parks 50 seemed to be used the most. So what Carbon steels can be used with #50 and what steels need AAA? I have 52100 and 80crv2 And have used 15n20. I won’t be HT a lot of blades at a time just a few. I would like to try W2 and 26c3 in the future. Is a one gal tank enough of oil to do 2 or 3 blades at a time?
Also do you guys use your HT oven to temper?
thanks

I have some Aebl and know Cryo is needed for best results. What would be the difference if you did not Cyro and would putting it in my deep freezer Help it at all?
Thanks.

I have in the past, but the Evenheat I have access to takes a couple hours too cool down from 1485 to 400 so I went back to tempering in my kitchen oven so that I can temper immediately after quenching in an effort to minimize any stresses on the steels.

At this time I use canola oil and seem to get decent results. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, but canola oil is a slow cooling oil and Parks 50 is fast cooling. I have worked with 1075, 26c3, 15n20, and 8670 with good results using canola oil and tempering with a toaster oven.

If W2 and 26C3 are in your future I’d go with Parks 50. Also the 52100 and 80CRV2 you already have can be quenched in Parks too. I don’t temper in my HT oven for the same reasons as Weo. I use my kitchen oven.
