Question about a Protech Godson

A few years ago at BLADE I was drooling over the custom shop knives at the Protech booth. The owner, Mr. Wattenberg walked over and asked if there was anything I wanted to look at. I explained to him that I had given my godson to my new brother in law as a wedding gift, and I was in the market for another one but wanted something a little different. Without speaking he reached under the cabinet and pulled out a crispy new green box. He handed it over to me, and a full g10 scale godson fell out. I hadn't seen this model but was immediately in love. I asked how much it was and he said it wasn't for sale because they had only made, I believe 5 pieces, just to see how lightweight they would be, or something along those lines. I was disheartened because it wasn't for sale and I told him that. He replied that just because it wasn't for sale didn't mean I couldn't have it. I was set aback. Long story short.....I carry it at least three or four times a week, and have done everything from clean my fingernails to scale and gut bluegill and crappie with it.

I will always be grateful for his generosity, and their customer service is top notch as well. I have eight or so other protects now, each as snappy and well built as the last.

I am wondering if anyone knows if this model was ever produced in volume, because I would like to buy another one, but even with my gooogle-fu I have come up empty handed.

Not to my knowledge. I'll own a couple if they do though.

Cool story too. Protech's a stand up brand. Makes sense that the owner would be a stand up guy.

Cool story. Dave chatted up my dad and I for like an hour and a half at Blade one year...hell of a nice guy!!

Yeah, he's a hell of a guy. My buddy bought a protech custom shop dark angel that I would club a baby seal for.

Well that answers that I suppose. I thought it may have been called the lightweight or ultralight. That's for the info guys!

Very nice looking knife and an awesome story OP. I wish they still made the G10 model and expanded it's use. I just don't care for metal handles I guess.

My very first Protech, a TR-5 should be delivered today! I'm a wee bit excited.
