heya there, quick, short lived question about the AR coating on my watch crystal...

i got this watch custom made a few weeks ago-- it's quite well made and satisfies my tastes but easier on the wallet...

the crystal reflects a bluish tint, for some reason. i've never seen this before on a watch-- is this an artifact of the AR coating? in correct lighting the crystal is clear and the watch face is matte black. on reflection it's bluish and irritating.

can anyone tell me about this AR coating? what's it primarily for? is it supposed to reflect like that? can i get it redone, or removed?

thanks.

here's a pic.

Your thoughts are correct.

The blue tint looks exactly like the AR on many of my watches. The coating is designed so that when you look through the crystal it "disappears". When viewed at an angle it gives off the blue hue that you have captured in your picture.

As you will eventually find out AR coatings are also prone to scratching as well given they are not as hard as the crystal they cover.

Ar coatings can be removed there are many watch modders out there who have done just that.

Just give a quick search on some of the popular watch forums and you will find countless threads dedicated to the subject.

Good luck. That is a good looking watch you have, wear it in good health.

cool, thanks for the advice, all.

i'll live with the AR coating for now-- the watch is too new to me to be messing with it. but if it starts developing a lot of scratches i might give the polishing technique a try.

Depending on the maker/modder, the AR coating can be only on the inside of the crystal, or on both the inside and outside of the crystal. My preference is only on the inside. If the coating is also in the outside, it's much more likely that the outside coating will show scratches and drive you nuts (at least if you're anal like me.) :D
